Birders: I have heard that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is strongly recommending a huge floodgate that would significantly restrict water flow to/from Jamaica Bay (by more than 50%), even in the open position. The floodgate would cross from Breezy Point, Queens to Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn. The Draft Integrated HSGRR/EIS, which is presently out for 60 day public review, outlines coastal storm risk management measures that were recommended for a long-term solution to manage the risk of coastal storm damages along the densely populated and economically valuable south shore of Rockaway.
