[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull+, Central Park, NYC 2/23

2016-02-23 Thread Thomas Fiore

Tuesday, 23 February, 2016 -

An Iceland Gull was present on the reservoir in Central Park
(Manhattan, NY. City) at ~ 8 a.m., as well as a breeding-plumaged
drake Red-breasted Merganser, both photo'd.; also seen again, smaller
goose with duskier breast, presumably the same one of much recent
discussion, with about 300+ additional (Canada) geese. At the bridle
path near the reservoir, a flock of 15 Cedar Waxwings appeared just
briefly in a small cluster of sumac trees.

good birding,

Tom Fiore

[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull, Central Park NYC 2/15

2016-02-15 Thread Thomas Fiore

Monday (President's day), 15 February, 2016 -

On the Central Park reservoir (in Manhattan, N.Y. City) at ~ 2 p.m., I
spotted an Iceland Gull in roughly the center-most portion of the 80%
iced-over reservoir; from the western side of the reservoir, standing
very approx. near what would be W. 89 St., the gull was in good view,
sitting on ice but just to the east of a wide & very long stretch of
open water that runs approx. north-south. The conditions are not
great, the gulls are (were) moving a bit, & there were perhaps 500+
gulls scattered around but esp. in the central area & on a n.-s. axis.

I may or may not get back with camera, & even then, photo-ops won't be
very good, as the gull's position was too far from any one place to
watch from. In the 15+ minutes I watched, it was however unobstructed
by any other birds. Also present was the smaller Canada Goose, which
may be a Lesser (form), but not a cackling; the geese were mostly
gathered closer to the north side pumping station bldg. A female
Common Merganser is still present, & there were still a good many N.
Shovelers, but reduced no's. of most of the other waterfowl & such
which are rather regular in winter there.
