Posting because I just encountered a number of people looking for the
continuing immature drake King Eider, at Brooklyn Army Terminal Pier 4.

The Eider, is currently just up the road at Bush Terminal Park. It is near
where the Scaup and Bufflehead usually gather.

Also earlier, a continuing Iceland Gull was also observed at Bush Terminal Park.

[nysbirds-l] King Eider Seekers, beware!

2020-11-22 Thread Gus Keri
Birders who might consider going for the King Eider at Dead Horse Point of
Brooklyn should be careful.
There is radioactivity contamination at the south side of the beach. This area
is located almost 200-300 meters from the Marine Parkway Bridge.
The main entrance to the park is closed, although I have seen few
treasure-seekers go through it.
I went there few times since the discovery but I entered from the marina and
stayed most of the time on the west shore of the point.
Good luck.
Here is the article:

[nysbirds-l] King Eider Queens Co.

2020-11-15 Thread Andrew Baksh
A young male King Eider that was found on November 7th by Mary Normandia
continues near the Breezy Point jetty. Choppy conditions and bad light made it
a tricky pickup but it is there. Please note this duck was reported yesterday
near Fort Tilden not far from the Silver Gull Club so it does move up and down
the beach.

Other notables included a few Royal Terns, Purple Sandpipers, Lesser
Black-backed Gulls and a few banded Herring and Ring-billed Gulls.

Stay safe and keep those masks above the nose.

Cheers,

[nysbirds-l] King Eider still present Keibal Rd Whitney Point Reservoir late this afternoon 11/10/2020

2020-11-10 Thread david nicosia
All,

The KING EIDER was farther up the shore on the Whitney Point Reservoir as seen
from Keibal Rd this afternoon on a gloriously warm sunny day. The bird was
farther offshore too and frequently diving. The exact location where I had the
bird today was   42.352361°N and 75.980250°W. The bird was slowly working its
way south again a little farther offshore.

I also had a flyover COMMON REDPOLL my first in Broome Co in a few years. The
bird unfortunately flew right toward the sun so I couldn't get a flight photo.
I also heard a PINE SISKIN as well. I thought I heard evening grosbeaks too but
they were so distant I am not 100% sure.

It was pretty quiet for songbirds. I didn't even get an american goldfinch! But
there was an AMERICAN TREE SPARROW that was calling and occasionally singing a
little which was cool near the end of the road.

My ebird list can be found here...   https://ebird.org/checklist/S76093911

[nysbirds-l] King Eider, Gr. White-fronted Goose, no Emperor Goose or Rose-breasted Grosbeak

2019-12-15 Thread Andrew Block
Went out today looking for these species and had some good luck.  The female
King Eider at Sterling Forest S.P. in Tuxedo is still there showing nicely at
the south end of the lake, but better to bring scope if it's not in close.
It's viewed from the road to the slightly to the left after turning onto the
entrance road to the headquarters from Long Meadow Rd.  People are not allowed
to drive down this private road as it is marked, but you can park at the
beginning on the left where the pull out is.  Then walk along the road til you
get to the first opening by the lake on the right and you're there.  It was
seen about half way out in the water.
I also went to look for the Greater White-fronted Goose in Rye Brook and found
it at the usual spot south of Bowman Ave.  The Emperor Goose I seem to keep
missing.  I checked The Tarrytown Reservoirs, White PLains H.S., and the golf
course east of Hathaway Lane in White Plains with no success.  I'm starting to
think it's a ghost.   I did have two juvenile eagles, many Common Mergansers,
and Buffleheads among others on the lakes at the different spots besides all
the geese.
Lastly I was alerted to a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak at a private residence in
Mamaroneck that was around for 4 days until 2 days ago.  Evidentily it's hasn't
shown for the last two days.  Oh well.

Re: [nysbirds-l] King Eider continues at Point Lookout

2018-01-20 Thread Brendan Fogarty
In addition to the adult male, a subadult male and a female were also seen
today in the same area, along with Harlequin Ducks, a Common Goldeneye, and
several thousand Greater Scaup.

I spent a decent amount of time trying to relocate the hundreds to
thousands of Lesser Scaup that have been reported by multiple observers at
this location lately. We all know that Greater is the saltwater species,
and there are rarely any other Aythya species in the area, but yes there
was the recent little Ice Age and some Lessers did make it to the coast.
Today I was only able to locate a single pair that looked right for Lesser
Scaup. Now there were many scaup that were in bad lighting or too far to
observe, but I implore anyone submitting Lesser to eBird to provide photos
or give a very thorough description. There are over 50 recent checklists
from the Jones Inlet area that include Lesser Scaup but until today none
had any photos nor any discussion of the difficult identification.

My point is that this was a remarkable waterfowl movement event and it
needs to be documented accurately. Also the eBird review system can only
generate one "Question about your Lesser Scuap" email at a time and
reviewer are unpaid volunteers, so please think of them too!

Today's checklist: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S42103707

Happy birdwatching,
Brendan

[nysbirds-l] King Eider, Jones Beach, Nassau

2018-01-07 Thread Timothy Healy
The first year male King Eider continues with the flock of sea ducks at the
West End jetty. No sign of the older male, but there was still lots of movement
and if it’s still in the area it may reappear later. I would’ve sent this
message out half an hour ago but my phone froze and shut down. Stay warm out
there!

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] King Eider Caumsett State Park Suffolk County

2016-07-18 Thread David Klauber
This morning a little after 9 the immature male King Eider swam in near shore
from a distant location in the sound. Other have looked unsuccessfully for the
bird on previous days around 7-8 with no luck, when the tide was high. On those
days it seemed to come in late morning on a low tide. This morning however it
swam in on an incoming high tide.
An enjoyable sight was a large colony of Bank Swallows doing well, near the
eastern edge of the unforested bluff. Both the swallows and the Eider were
about halfway between the end of the fishing drive and the next point further
east.

[nysbirds-l] King Eider at Caumsett SP (YES)

2016-07-13 Thread Menachem Goldstein
I just received an update and photos from Bobby Rossetti that indeed a young
male King Eider was seen along Long Island Sound at Caumsett State Park between
thefisherman’s parking lot and the area just past the pond to the east at low
tide earlier today.   It is evidently working its way up and down the
shoreline.  Photos from Bobby are posted to my flickr account with his
permission https://www.flickr.com/gp/80885180@N07/2qXH3D.
Please note I refrained from reposting original WhatBird King Eider photo which
Ethan Maitra referenced due to possible copyright issues.  A) I do not know the
usability status of images submitted to WhatBird b) I do not even know who the
original finder of the eider is and C) I did not know how to contact them in
order to get proper permission.  It was and likely still is available through
the WhatBird site which can be viewed by making a "dummy account".
Thank you Shai and Matthew for providing the updates on over-summering and
breeding ducks on Long Island and for Bobby for confirming the bird's presence.
Good Birding,
Menachem

[nysbirds-l] King Eider, Thick-billed Murre at Shinnecock Inlet (Suffolk Co.)

2016-03-30 Thread Ken Feustel
Sue and I spent the morning and early afternoon birding Dune Road from
Shinnecock to Moriches Inlet. Spring migrants were few in number, but a few
late wintering birds spiced up our list. Just west of the Inlet a mixed flock
of Scoter and Common Eider contained a single female King Eider. While we were
walking north down the inlet jetty to check the sandbars in Shinnecock Bay a
breeding-plumaged Thick-billed Murre came out of the bay heading south up the
inlet, passing close enough to us to allow binocular views.

Some Spring migrants we observed included Great Egret, Osprey, and Tree
Swallow. Over fifteen hundred scoters were seen during our trip, either in the
water or heading east over the ocean.

[nysbirds-l] King Eider - Bayville Beach (Nassau Co.)

2014-01-01 Thread Brendan Fogarty
Happy New Year everyone,

A female King Eider was far offshore from Stehli Beach (the westernmost beach
on the Bayville strip). I was standing just beyond the little pavillion about
halfway down the parking lot and looking due north. It was associating with a
long line of White-winged Scoter (and almost nothing else) a couple of hundred
yards offshore. I thought I saw a report of a female from this area sometime in
the last couple of weeks but can't find it now - and I assume this was the same
bird the Northern Nassau CBC reported.

There was one flock of goldeneye there - no Barrow's. A second group was
halfway between the big parking area for Ransom Beach in Bayville and the
apparently private overlook on Merritt Lane to the east. A cursory look showed
no funky goldeneyes, although apparently a female was there this morning per
Angus Wilson on eBird. Also no luck around Sands Point, although Andrew Baksh
had a drake there this morning as well.
