Re: [nysbirds-l] Marshlands Conservancy in Rye (Westchester Co): odd "egret" on 8/21
Hi Phil, Sure is one! Nice. There was one in CT last year or the year before that eventually died and is now in the Yale museum. Hope this one survives better. By the way this list is actually for the whole state, hence NYS birds, so definitely the place to report this. For some reason upstaters rarely report to this list:-( Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Marshlands Conservancy
A great surprise this morning was a well seen mourning warbler right near parking area. A few least terns were also a first for me at the Park perhaps for the County. Shorebirds were in short supply at least between 1015-1145. L. [nysbirds-l] Marshlands Conservancy (Rye) Boat-tailed Grackle
A male Boat-tailed Grackle was seen (and heard singing)from a tree on an offshore island at Marshlands this morning. It then flew to another section of the marsh and disappeared. A singing male Boat-tailed Grackle, still rare in Westchester County, continues at Marshlands Conservancy in Rye. [nysbirds-l] Marshlands Conservancy birds
Had the Clay-colored Sparrow and Orange-crowned Warbler this afternoon around 3:30 or so and got some nice shots of the sparrow. The birds were along the edge of the trees on the parking lot side of the large field where the path juts out around the trees and goes back. The sparrow was in with the usual American Tree/White-throated/Song Sparrow flock that hangs around that area. The warbler popped up on top of a tall shrub soon after I pointed out the sparrow to some other birders. Also had a beautiful male Northern Harrier flying around the field and through the forest. [nysbirds-l] Marshlands Conservancy, Mourning Warbler
All, Yesterday afternoon my wife and I visited Marshlands Conservancy, near Rye, Westchester County. I have not been there in many years. The highlights were 4-6 Osprey, one imm Bald Eagle, and a Mourning Warbler. The female or imm bird was seen briefly in a grape thicket just east of the main path, a bit north of where the path descends to the causeway leading to the island. Mourning Warbler was not checked on the list in the little visitor's center. I guess that's their year list. [nysbirds-l] Marshlands Conservancy--late Osprey, Blue-headed Vireo and House Wren
After spending over 2 hours at Cove Island Park enjoying the Fork-tailed Flycatcher (photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/jgluth_brb/) I birded nearby Marshlands Conservancy in Rye for nearly 3 hours. I failed to find hoped for Nelson's Sparrows in the marshes, but there was an immature OSPREY hunting over the bay close to shore. In the thickets bordering the east side of the large field, were a HOUSE WREN and a BLUE-HEADED VIREO. A few Tree Sparrows were also present. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Marshlands Conservancy 10/17
Hi all, I birded Marshlands in Rye this morning for a couple hours. Highlights included 3 REDHEADS, LINCOLN'S, FIELD and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS (for a total of 11 sparrow species I've seen there this month, including 4 Nelson's and 1 Saltmarsh last week), 5 AMERICAN PIPITS, a late-ish BLUE-HEADED VIREO, NASHVILLE and PALM WARBLERS, and over 600 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS (still coming through when I left at 930) and 6 PURPLE FINCHES in morning flight. Also a Common Loon flyover early on and my FOS Hermit Thrush. [nysbirds-l] Marshlands Conservancy (Westchester) Golden-winged Warbler
This morning I found a male Golden-winged Warbler at the Marshlands Conservancy in Rye. The bird was at the Northwest corner of the Jay Estate parking lot briefly at 8:45, but I could not relocate after that. Apparently, this is the first fall record for Marshlands. There were 10 other wood-warblers, highlighted by a Tennessee and including Parula, Canada, and Chestnut-sided. Other migrants were mulitple Red-eyed Vireos, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, and Veerys, as well as a flyover Kestrel.
