New York Botanical Garden, Bronx Saturday, November 25, 2017 OBS: Robert DeCandido, PhD, Deborah Allen, m.ob.
Additional Info on Empidonax Flycatcher: First, as mentioned in my original report, the bird was spotted by Karen Evans and seen by the rest of the group next to the Native Plant Garden. To be more precise, it was just outside the Native Plant Garden where there is a path that runs along the ridge on the side of the Native Plant Garden closest to the Conservatory. We weren't able to relocate the bird when we returned to the area just before lunch. The bird had a short, narrow bill, a rounded head with a steep forehead, and a conspicuous eye ring. It also had a medium-short primary projection. Here are links to 5 photos. Least Flycatcher, NYBG, Bronx, Saturday November 25, 2017: https://www.photo.net/photo/18440208/Least-Flycatcher https://www.photo.net/photo/18440199/Least-Flycatcher https://www.photo.net/photo/18440202/Least-Flycatcher https://www.photo.net/photo/18440201/Least-Flycatcher https://www.photo.net/photo/18440209/Least-Flycatcher -- These photos were posted in the New York Birders Facebook Group on Saturday where they generated a bit of discussion. Everyone who offered an opinion on the bird identified it as a Least Flycatcher including Richard Aracil and Isaac Grant. November 25th is a rather late date for a Least Flycatcher, but not so late as the Least Flycatcher identified by Kenn Kaufman, et al. on the Central Park Christmas count December 16, 2001. With all the excitement over the Central Park flycatcher, I must apologize for having left the info on the NYBG bird on the back burner.
