[nysbirds-l] Nighthawks

2018-09-04 Thread Jaklitsch, Mike
Last fall John Turner and I discussed how interesting it would be to hold a
Nighthawk count west of the Stone Bridge count to see if there were
similarities or not.

Keeping this in mind I was able to get out for three days this weekend to see
what might be flying around northeastern Queens. I conducted counts on three
evenings this week as noted below, all from the end of the APEC boardwalk
overlooking the marsh. Last night's results were better, although nothing like
John's results. Despite starting each night somewhere around 6pm or earlier,
all birds were seen at 7:09pm or later.

31 August 2018 - 75 min, 0 Nighthawks, 3 swifts
2 September 2018 - 112 min, 3 Nighthawks, 3 swifts
3 September 2018 - 94 min, 7 Nighthawks, 18 swifts

[nysbirds-l] Nighthawks at Stone Bridge - Frank Melville Park

2017-09-07 Thread redknot
What a difference a day makes! In an hour of nighthawk watching in yesterday's
rain I had a grand total of 3 birds.

Tonight in two hours of observation we saw 302 nighthawks, the significant
majority of which were flying east to west and the largest total tallied yet in
this new watch by Four Harbors Audubon Society.

Toward dusk 16 birds came down to feed over the north pond.

[nysbirds-l] Nighthawks @ Meville Park

2016-10-08 Thread redknot
Visiting the stone bridge at Melville Park proved quite productive Friday night
as a team effort by Byron Young, Patrice Domeischel, and I produced 60+
nighthawks feeding actively over the two ponds in the span of an hour and a
half.

Their behavior was interesting. For the first 45 minutes or so the birds stayed
high, hawking for insects several hundred feet above the ground. Toward dusk,
however, they descended to the point they were below the tree-line, only 5-20
feet above the water surface.  For the first time ever I saw a nighthawk drink
on the wing as it skimmed the pond's surface.

Byron and I agreed we could discern a definite influx of birds coming in from
the north, from Conscience Bay, and to a lesser extent from the east.  Given
this, watching for nighthawks from the Old Field Lighthouse might prove
especially productive, if permission could be granted to park along the road.

[nysbirds-l] Nighthawks again - Suffolk County

2016-10-07 Thread David Klauber
This evening Bob May and I saw between 25-30 Nighthawks over a field on Sound
Avenue in Wading River, near the Levin farm stand, about 1/2 mile east of the
25/25A split, on the north side (water tower in teh distance is a good
reference). Some may remember the late Jim Clinton doing annual surveys here.
Unfortunately in the past I never managed to get out there. It was my loss,
because it was an enjoyable experience seeing them close by, flying over us at
times, then diving low over the fields. None were vocalizing as far as I could
hear

[nysbirds-l] Nighthawks at Melville Park

2016-10-06 Thread redknot
Went back to the stone bridge at Frank Melville Park in Setauket this evening
for the third night out of the last four to look for nighthawks. Spent a little
more than an hour there and saw 31 nighthawks overhead, although that may
represent a slight overcount since the trees along the western edge of the pond
blocked the ability to see movement clearly and birds I thought were new,
undetected birds may have been birds that swung back around.

Like the report for Caumsett that Dave Klauber provided, the nighthawks at
Melville were very high, some barely distinguishable although I was using 12X
binoculars.. a very different experience from the other night when the
birds were skimming over the pond surface.

Arie Gilbert and his friend Bob (don't remember last name) arrived toward
the end of the watching period and saw a dozen or so of the birds...

Another wonderful night enjoying goatsuckers.

Late this morning there was a small flock of Nighthawks flying very high over
the northern part of Caumsett, as viewed from just west of the parking lot.
Very well spotted by the Feustels. They seemed to be staying in the area for
the 20 - 30 minutes that we watched them

[nysbirds-l] Nighthawks at Heckscher SP

2009-09-03 Thread jgluth
John Turner's post prompted me to offer up the results of my own nighthawk
watch, in afield in Heckscher Park's northwest section this past Monday evening
(8/31).From 7PM-8PM I saw at least 15 nighthawks (8 visible at one time) moving
in a generally southeast-northwest direction, some passing right overhead,
others over the treeline at the south end of the field or beyond. Some
backtracking and milling about by the birds renders my estimate of 15 birds a
very conservative one - there could have easily been 25 or more. Over the last
14 years I've found Heckecher to be a very reliable location to observe
migrating nighthawks. During late August and early September, if you start
watching around dusk on a day with mostly clear skies and a light northerly
wind, seeing at least 5-10 birds is an almost sure thing. - John Gluth

[nysbirds-l] Nighthawks at Heckscher SP

2009-09-02 Thread redknot
I spent several hours at Heckscher State Park tonight hoping for nighthawks.
Had three birds just as I was getting ready to leave.  Three killdeer were in
the parking lot and had four migrating osprey.  The full moon was a treat as
was the planet jupiter with two visible moons.
