[nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe no

2023-09-13 Thread Andrew Block
Didn't go through before.
No sign of the Say's Phoebe at the landfill at Pelham Bay Park.  Just lots of
Kestrels, Ravens and Lanternflies.  Was there from 11:30am to 2:30pm.

[nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe

2021-10-20 Thread Klein Coby
Didn’t get a chance to post this yesterday, but after viewing the very cooperative phoebe (actually phoebes, since there were a few easterns around) at Caumsett St. Park, I wandered into an adjoining field and inadvertently flushed a woodcock out of the tall grass. Immediately after that a kestrel joined us and put on a show, flying back and forth from one side of the field to the other while calling loudly. There were also savannah sparrows galore. More than I’ve seen in one place before. Coby Klein Sent from Mail for Windows

[nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe, Caumsett State Park, Suffolk County

2021-10-15 Thread Suzanne Feustel
The Say’s Phoebe was still being seen by a group of birders at 1:30 PM when I
left the Park. It continued to favor the same location.
If you are planning on going tomorrow there is a 5K race beginning at 9:30 AM.
The area that the Phoebe is favoring is used for overflow parking and is likely
to busy.

The SAY'S PHOEBE was not relocated after I texted it out and posted it to
the birding listservs on Sunday, in spite of people arriving at the site not
long afterward. By the way, Vicki Rothman sent me a diagnostic photo of the
bird that she took.

[nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe - Orleans County

2017-11-12 Thread Willie D'Anna
Vicki Rothman and Kathy DiVito just found a SAY'S PHOEBE south of the
Village of Clarendon in Orleans County. The bird was in a horse pasture on
New Guinea Rd, not far from the intersection with Upper Holly Rd.
Unfortunately, I don't know if the pasture is east or west of New Holly Rd
but, as I noted, it is not far from that road.

Good luck if you are able to go for it!

Re: [nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe - Yates County

2017-10-06 Thread Jay McGowan
I corresponded with the observer and looked for the bird this morning, from
dawn until around 8:45, but with no luck. He said it was hanging around his
barn and on fences out in his fields all afternoon yesterday, but he has
not seen it so far today. Light rain kept activity low while we were there,
so it's possible it might still be in the area. He said he would let me
know promptly if it reappears today or in coming days, so I will get the
word out with contact information if that happens, but it may have moved on
as these species often does. It did spend all its time on private property
and would have been challenging to see from the road, but Ulf was very
friendly and knowledgable and would undoubtedly be willing to host more
birders should the bird return.

[nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe Pics and Directions (And Wheatear Update)

2014-10-06 Thread Corey Finger
If you are going for the Say's Phoebe at Edgemere today here is the easiest
way to get there by car:

Get out to the Rockaways via the Cross Bay Bridge and head east on Beach
Channel Drive. Take a left on Beach 51st Street (after passing a housing
project on your left) and at the end of Beach 51st Street continue straight
(be careful, the entrance has a kind of big bump). Drive past the
sanitation facility on your right and where the road ends take a right.
This will put you behind the sanitiation facility. Turn right and drive
around the bottom of the capped landfill. The bird was last seen on the
northeast side where there is a gravel road that goes up to the top of the
landfill. Make sure to drive slowly on and around the landfill as the road
is pretty rough. If you have a low-clearance vehicle do not try to go up on
top, especially from the access directly behind the sanitation facility. (I
do it but I have a Ford Focus that doesn't mind a bit of punishment.)

You can also take the A train to Beach 44th Street or Beach 60 Street and
walk from there.

There have not been any issues in the last year or so with Sanitation
Department employees making people leave and the wild dog pack has been
gone for at least 18 months.

If you look at Google maps, Edgemere Preserve is the big green bulge
sticking out of the Rockaways south of JFK airport that is labeled
“Rockaway Community Park.”

Pics of the bird are here:
http://1birds.com/a-says-phoebe-at-edgemere-landfill-queens-new-york.htm

Also, the Northern Wheatear was seen again yesterday evening as reported on
the New York Birders Facebook page by Gus Keri who wrote:

"It was very unfortunately for a lot of people who went to Plumb beach to
see the Northern Wheatear today but they could not. I felt sorry for them.
The bird was last seen around 11:30 am and then no body saw it again.

After I walked along the south side of the beach, I couldn't see it either.
then, I decided to go to the northern end where it was reported (near the
Graffiti boat), which meant I had to walk back to the parking lot and walk
along the north side of the beach because of the high tide that blocked the
way; and here it was.

The bird was flying back and forth between the bushes that are lining the
northern side of the high tide water.

the best way to reach this area during high tide is by walking the paved
path on the side of the Belt Parkway and then go down to the beach just
before you reach the bridge."

He continued in the comments: "We saw the bird on 4 different occasions
between 4:30 pm and 6:00 pm. It landed near a small bush just 50 meters
north of the boat on two occasions."

Finally, here are some images of the Strack Pond Connecticut Warbler, which
was last seen on Friday:

Re: [nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe, Queens

2014-10-05 Thread Arie Gilbert
The Say's Phoebe found this morning at Edgemere Park, Queens co.,
remained on the north-east slope thru sunset.

For those interested in chasing, the bird will probably be present
tomorrow morning due to it's late stay, and it's finding a lot of food
in its current location. The lighting will also be better for photos in
the am, [ behind you ] as compared to this evening [ looking into sun ]
if the bird is in the same location.

[nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe - Hamlin, NY (Monroe County)

2014-09-05 Thread Andy Guthrie
At 6:15 today I found a SAY'S PHOEBE on the wires along Jacobs Road in
Hamlin, NY (Monroe County). The Phoebe remained in the area until dark,
mostly along the wires but eventually moving to a hedgerow running south
between corn fields on the south side of the road. It appeared to go to
roost in the cornfield and with the weather moving in tonight may remain in
the area.

The location was about 0.3 miles west of the intersection of Jacobs Road
and Priem Road (Jacobs runs east-west between Priem Road and Redman Road on
the west side). The hedgerow where we last saw it was slightly east of
utility pole #267 (seventh pole from Priem Road).

eBird checklist with some photos here:

[nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe Fire Island Hawkwatch

2013-09-18 Thread Shaibal Mitra
A Say's Phoebe made a very brief appearance at the Fire Island hawkwatch around
9:00, first detected by Tony Tierno, and immediately enjoyed by all on hand:
Trudy Battaly, Billy Hanley, Norm Klein, Drew Panko, me--and VIP Andy Baldelli,
for whom it was a state bird! (Andy's been out of state for a while.)

After watching it for a few seconds, I left it under their care while I ran
back to get my scope. Unfortunately, it began bouncing westward almost
immediately, and despite Andy's and my vigorous efforts, we lost it along the
median.

Other highlights included a nice hawk flight, a notable influx of Savannah
Sparrows, a late Orchard Oriole, a late-ish Cliff Swallow, and a double-V of
Double-crested Cormorants, with each group being led by an immature Great
Cormorant.

We checked Captree afterward, almost expecting to find a visibly different
Say's Phoebe there, but dipped of course.

[nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe no, but other good birds

2013-04-28 Thread kenalla...@earthlink.net
Fellow Birders;
As noted previously by Shane Blodgett, the Say's Phoebe did not seem to
be present at yesterday's location in Prospect Park. Perhaps it is still in
the park, but the area with sumacs was overrun with unleashed dogs; now matter
how well they are behaved, the have to effect a low-foraging bird such as the
phoebe. I was in the area (moving about some) from about 7 a.m.- 11:a.m--
there were many talented birds around, no one reported the phoebe. It is
possible that the bird will return when the canine traffic diminishes during
the week.
On the good side, this was the best day of migration thus far, and I doubt
that anyone left the park disappointed. I enjoyed a dozen species of warbler,
including Ovenbird, Blackburnian, Prairie, Black-throated Blue, and Kentucky,
all of these FOS for me. Also Warbling, Blue-headed, Red-eyed, and White-Eyed
Vireos (the latter two FOS), and FOS Wood and Swainson's Thrush. The latter
struck me as a bit early, but in checking my records I see that I've seen it
once this early in NY-- I see species this by the thousands in passage in
Panama, have no doubt as to my i.d.. It was a glorious day, extralimital
species (absent) aside! Happy birding to all.

No sign of yesterday's Say's Phoebe on the peninsula meadow or in the peninsula

I also couldn't find it along any of the edges of meadows that I biked around

[nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe Prospect Park - late afternoon update from 4-27...

2013-04-28 Thread Andrew Baksh
Since no one posted from late yesterday, I figured I would. The Say's
Phoebe was enjoyed by many yesterday afternoon as it actively did its
flycatching thing around the Sumac area. , but suddenly around 5:05 p.m. it
picked up and flew off heading in a South Easterly direction.

Despite coverage by several birders, we did not locate the bird and when I
left Prospect Park around 6:30 p.m. it still had not been re-found.

A good strategy in looking for this bird today, might be to start at the
Sumac location (see Peter's link below). A very nice bird for Brooklyn and
many thanks to Tom Burke and Gail Benson who stayed with the bird until I
showed up after making the run from LI.

A few photos can be viewed here.

[nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe pics

2013-04-27 Thread Corey Finger
A few more shots of the Say's Phoebe in Prospect Park are below. It was an
incredibly easy twitch - even a three-year-old could do it! (And did, as my
son, Desi, followed up last weekend's Ruff with the phoebe this weekend.)

http://1birds.com/says-phoebe-in-prospect-park-brooklyn-new-york.htm

Other than the phoebe the only highlights we had earlier in the day at Oakland
Lake and APEC in Queens were Warbling Vireos and Yellow Warblers at both
locations, and single nice male Common Yellowthroat at Oakland Lake (behind the
backstop on the baseball field across from the east end of the lake).

Good Birding,

Location question. The location was described as the north end of the meadow
leading to the peninsula. The map referenced by Arie Gilbert shows a point on
the other side of the lake, southwest of the skating rink, quite far away from
the peninsula.
Which is correct?

Photos from this morning's discovery can be found here:

I've embedded the location in the photos. You have to zoom in (2) layers to
see it (just hover over the map). Seen just off of Wellhouse Dr at the edge
of the Peninsula.

Cheers,

Re: [nysbirds-l] SAY'S PHOEBE, Prospect Park Brooklyn

2013-04-27 Thread Elizabeth D Poole
Location question. The location was described as the north end of the meadow
leading to the peninsula. The map referenced by Arie Gilbert shows a point on
the other side of the lake, southwest of the skating rink, quite far away from
the peninsula.
Which is correct?

There is a likely SAY'S PHOEBE on the north side of the Peninsula meadow in
Prospect Park, Brooklyn.

Overall drab bird with faint salmony undertail coverts and belly. Black
undertail with no rufous.

Watching with multiple observers.

[nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe - Coxsackie, The Greene County

2011-11-19 Thread Richard Guthrie
This morning I came across a SAY'S PHOEBE at the Coxsackie Grasslands, off
Rt 9-W in The Greene County. [about 1 mile south of Twy Exit 21-B]

The bird was actively feeding and flying about with a southerly directional
tendency before I left the vicinity to avoid chasing it as it was very
active.

Typical of phoebes, it was found feeding on insects on the side of a
sun-warmed building.

Although the bird was found in a restricted access area (please be mindful
of that), it may stick around and might relocate to a more public viewing
area.

If that be the case, it might find its way to the southern perimeter of the
preserve - the area across from Red's Restaurant or there-abouts.

In the process of taking a few nice crispy clear photos of Cattails and
goldenrod deadheads, I did manage to capture a fuzzy image of a rusty red
flycatcher type bird in the same pictures. [yes, I'm fixin to upgrade my
camera tool kit]

I plan to go back first thing tomorrow (Sunday) morning to see if it is in a
pattern and might still be present. Or not.

Either way, I'll post from the field.

[nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe at Caumsett State Park Update (Suffolk Co.)

2011-10-04 Thread ken feustel
I was finally able to reach CSP at about 3:30PM and gradually was joined by a
small group of birders who all got good spotting scope looks at the phoebe. At
one point the phoebe grabbed an Orange Sulphur butterfly and an envious Eastern
Phoebe tried to grab it away (no luck). Birders should be aware that this site
is part of an active grasslands restoration project and tilling of the field is
scheduled to begin tomorrow at about 8:00AM.

In addition to the Phoebe there were a good variety of raptors around,
including 1-3 Bald Eagles, Cooper's Hawk, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Osprey, Merlin,
and American Kestrel. The Phoebe seemed unfazed by all this activity, sitting
tight while any raptor was coursing the fields.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe at Caumsett State Park (Suffolk Co.)

2011-10-04 Thread Shaibal Mitra
The bird showed nicely from when I re-found it around 1:15 to when I left at
2:45. Thanks Annie, Sue, and Ken!

I recommend bringing a scope and standing back by the line of locust trees
mentioned in Ken's post.

Scan the brush-hogged stubble and wooden posts to the west. The bird stays low
and moves around actively, over a fairly wide area, which is nevertheless
almost completely visible from the locust trees. If people enter the fields to
get closer views, their views are unlikely to remain close for very long; more
importantly, the bird's ability to move around as it pleases would be
restricted, and it might decide to move on.

I've posted some photos at the end of this album:

Annie McIntyre and Sue Feustel discovered a Say's Phoebe late this morning in
the west fields of Caumsett State Park on Lloyd Neck. The fields are to the
west of the park entrance road and parking area/toll booth. If you go you can
consult the map in the kiosk just path the toll booth. However, if you just
walk in a northwest direction from the parking lot you will crest a hill and
see the fields just beyond a few tall Locust trees. Cell phone service is
erratic at CSP - you may not be able to call anyone from a given location. Good
luck if you go (I am stuck waiting for a LIPA representative to service our
burner).

[nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe at Caumsett State Park (Suffolk Co.)

2011-10-04 Thread ken feustel
Annie McIntyre and Sue Feustel discovered a Say's Phoebe late this morning in
the west fields of Caumsett State Park on Lloyd Neck. The fields are to the
west of the park entrance road and parking area/toll booth. If you go you can
consult the map in the kiosk just path the toll booth. However, if you just
walk in a northwest direction from the parking lot you will crest a hill and
see the fields just beyond a few tall Locust trees. Cell phone service is
erratic at CSP - you may not be able to call anyone from a given location. Good
luck if you go (I am stuck waiting for a LIPA representative to service our
burner).
