Wheater is still giving great looks! Favoring orange cones by the "Cottages
9-10 Parking" sign when it's not in the median.

Here are coordinates for anyone not familiar with the area:

FYI, a search at Plumb Beach in the usual locations from about 9:00 to

[nysbirds-l] Wheatear- NO

2014-10-01 Thread Andrew Baksh
The Northern Wheatear went missing a little bit after the last positive
report earlier this morning and has not been refound.

A number of birders combed the areas the bird was last seen, searching as
far west as the weedy lot adjacent to the motel near Knapp Street.

I also checked Breezy Point but struck out. I would encourage birders,
planning on going to Plum to widen the search areas to include Dead Horse
Bay.

Excellent bird for Brooklyn and good for Shane Blodgett, who has faithfully
pounded that patch.

Good luck to all who try and please post an update to the list serves.

Cheers,

Andrew

Cheers,

Andrew

[nysbirds-l] Wheatear

2011-09-17 Thread Mike

A group of us including Jim Ash and Vicki Bustamante watched the Wheatear until
about 1115. It was last seen around the small ponds behind the main building at
Deep Hollow Ranch. It was frequently perching up on the fence posts.

Good luck if you go!

[nysbirds-l] Wheatear

2011-09-17 Thread Hugh McGuinness
Karen Rubinstein has just found a NORTHERN WHEATEAR at Theodore Roosevelt
County Park in Montauk, eastern Suffolk County. Take Rt 27 through the
village of Montauk and look for the park on the left (north) about a half
mile after East Lake Drive. Turn into the park and park near the buildings.
Walk east toward the barn to a gate and notice a wide path that lead to the
barn. The Wheatear has been foraging to the left (north) of the path among
the small plants (goldenrods) on the slope above the west side of the pond
that lies north of the barn.

Bird was a no show through 715pm tonight, thurs, sept. 8.  Adult Bald Eagle and
at least 50 Common Nighthawks were a nice consolation, though.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Wheatear Question

2011-09-08 Thread Richard Guthrie
Thanks, everyone, for the info.

Unfortunately, since I was on a tight schedule, I couldn't entertain the
thought of getting off the train at Croton. I had to be in Albany to do my
radio show. And, as it was, because of additional delays north of
Poughkeepsie (trees down on the tracks), I made it to the studio with only
minutes to spare. My question: was the bird in a place where it might be
seen from the train: was intended to offer some help to others who might be
passing through while facing similar constraints.

As for me, I'll just have to be content with seeing several Bald Eagles,
Ospreys, and two Snowy Egrets in with Great Egrets along the Hudson as the
Amtrak train crawled north on CSX rails; and, having seen N. Wheatear
elsewhere in NY State.

Hi Fred and Rich,

Here's a Google Map with various points plotted:

http://g.co/maps/sqd4a

Very unlikely to see the bird from the train, and unfortunately definitely
not from where the train stops to let off passengers.

Once in the HUGE parking lot for the train station (in a car or on foot), go
to the extreme south end, so you can't go any further or you'd be in the
water. You'll pass all the commuters' cars, and then probably some empty
parking lot space (keeping the tracks to your right). You'll pass the large
shed and arrive at the very small parking lot at the end by the small boat
ramp, where the bird has been seen.

Good luck!

Good luck!

[nysbirds-l] Wheatear- Seen@ 3:15PM

2011-09-08 Thread Jack Rothman
Richard Aracil, Deborah Allen and I watched the bird on a pile of large broken
rocks across many rows of track at about 3:25 this afternoon. Other birders
were present as well. To find the pile of rocks, face the fence, midway to the
end of parking lot J, on the attached map. Obviously, the bird may not be there
on Friday but that is where it was last seen. A spotting scope is helpful.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Wheatear Question

2011-09-07 Thread Tom Fiore

Re: the Northern Wheatear in Westchester Co.

It might sort of follow that anyone arriving early and finding the
Northern Wheatear still present at Croton-Harmon Metro-North RR
station's vicinity could attempt to post a report as early as they're
able to for the others who would be most interested...

and as well, should NO one spot that bird in the first couple of hours
of daylight Thursday... There is some migration taking place at this
very hour. After a while searching, a "negative" report is also a
courtesy to many others that might consider a longer trip & so on.

Best of luck - hope it sticks another night & day.

Manhattan

RE: [nysbirds-l] Wheatear Question

2011-09-07 Thread Robert Lewis
Seeing it from a moving train?  That's quite a stretch. Virtually no chance.
Once the train has stopped at the station?  Even less likely. Get out and walk!

The area is very easy to find.  I posted these coordinates yesterday (the green
arrow if you feed this into Google maps).

41.184524, -73.879591

Croton Harmon Station is hard to miss.  Just exit off route 9/9A. Google maps.

Just go south down the driveway, called "Veteran's Plaza" on Google. All of
the tracks are to the west. Pass the area where the hundreds of cars will be
parked (mostly on your left, the east). As you go south, the asphalt narrows.
That's good; it makes it easy to find the location where the bird was. It is
easy to park down there. Put Google Maps on "Satellite" and magnify it to the
100 foot scale. The south end of the maintenance building that has been
mentioned is at

41.1856, -73.88016

The gravel pile (not in the Google photo) is about 20 feet south.

I'm trying to be objective, as I know the area so well, but, really, you can't
miss it -- the area, that is.

Croton Harmon Station is hard to miss.  Just exit off route 9/9A. Google maps.

Just go south down the driveway, called Veteran's Plaza on Google. All of
the tracks are to the west. Pass the area where the hundreds of cars will be
parked (mostly on your left, the east). As you go south, the asphalt narrows.
That's good; it makes it easy to find the location where the bird was. It is
easy to park down there. Put Google Maps on Satellite and magnify it to the
100 foot scale. The south end of the maintenance building that has been
mentioned is at

The gravel pile (not in the Google photo) is about 20 feet south.

I'm trying to be objective, as I know the area so well, but, really, you can't
miss it -- the area, that is.

To add to Fred’s question: Would it
be possible to see the Wheatear from a through Amtrak or Metro-north train as
it is stopped at the station without getting off? Knowing in advance might help
a thru-traveler know where to pre-position on the train to have a shot at the
bird.

Amtrak train around 10 this morning and didn’t see the bird : (

Not that I had much in the way of hopes of
spotting it. But who knows; someone else might be able to.

Question

For those of us unfamiliar with the area and the station,
can someone tell me, is it obvious where to go to look for the Northern
Wheatear?  Do you follow signs to the Croton-Harmon MetroNorth RR
station?  Drive to the south end of the parking lot?  Will the
rock pile and the shed be easily seen?

I plan on going tomorrow morning.  Thanks!!

Re: [nysbirds-l] Wheatear seen as of 12:50pm

2011-09-06 Thread Benjamin Van Doren
Hi all,

Wheatear was still there as of 6 PM. Frequenting the fence along the train
tracks but also flying all around the area, perching in trees, on a garbage
can, and often staying on the ground inside the train track fence. Luckily,
the many trains moving by would flush the bird onto the fence for great
looks when this occurred.

Superb looks at a superbly cooperative bird!

Update:  easily visible from around 2:50 - 3:10pm when I left. killer looks.

When I left it was perched on top of a gravel pile, about 6 feet off the ground.

Plenty of easy parking here.  Just keep driving south.
