[obc] Bike Pump Recall

2002-08-20 Thread tim aubin

Hi all,
I know of at least a couple of you have a model of the pump that is being
recalled. See info below.
Tim Aubin, member.

PRODUCT RECALL: About 3,000 Joe Blow floor pumps are
being recalled after the report of an eye injury caused by a
part popping off.

The recalled pumps are numbered 23-200012 and
200101-200108.

Todson, the distributor, is replacing the pumps with a
different Joe Blow model or giving a refund. If you have one
of the potentially dangerous pumps, return it to the
retailer or call Todson at 800/213-4561, ext. 350.

RE: [obc] TT results on OBC links

2002-08-20 Thread Les Humphreys (K)

Many are called but few are chosen !

Of the fact that Celia is doing a super job, there can be no doubt, however,
in order to get results at all you need people to actually run the program.
We have been very fortunate so far in having Jim Glover and his associates
giving their time, but the high turn out of riders is not reflected in the numbers
willing to volunteer.
It would be just great if we had more than one candidate for Time Trial
Co-Ordinator if that position were put up for election.

Subject: [obc] TT results on OBC links

Earlier this season I had pointed out, to the OBC
Board, the lack of TT results on the OBC website. I
was told, at that time, that it was being developed
and we should all be more patient. Since Celia had
(and has!) continued to independently produce
excellent
quality result pages and since it appeared that
development of the official TT pages had hardly
started, I suggested that, at least until the work
was complete, a link be made from the OBC web to
Celia's result pages. My suggestion was ignored, and
at one point there were no updates to the official TT
result pages for more than a month of our competetive
season.

We have now had almost a whole season of TT's,
and most members of the club have mostly viewed the
results from Celia's link that she sends out each
week. The reality is that Celia is supporting the
club member requirements, and is certainly recognized
within the membership for her superb work and
dedication, though it seems unappreciated by the
OBC board.

If the OBC board is unwilling to appreciate the TT
results we did have (which I feel were second to none
of any bicycle club sites), then I would recommend
that the TT keeper position be an elected position.
You know where my vote will go.

Advantages of Celia's site: colour coded for easy
viewing and picking out relative placements; links
from each line detail to access other grouping
information (by category, name, or speed); timeliness
of data onto the site; weather details; proper seed
sheets; BAR calculations; ABC results; complete and
accurate results (i.e. all categories (I notice the
PeeWee is missing from August 8 official results - too
bad, as I think it's great to encourage the young
cyclists); complete volunteer lists (once again, we
can't survive without volunteers, and they should
always be recognized)); there may be more issues, but
I sure haven't done an in depth search).

I am a user of this information, appreciate having it,
and knowing that we have had the quality support from
Celia, certainly would not expect that we need to take
a step backwards as technological capabilities
generally takes steps forward.

Michael

[obc] Sept. 5 Handicap TT Mystery

2002-08-20 Thread Hermann Christa Kerckhoff

To All and Sally and Les

Yes, Jim Glover is the man, he does a fabulous job running the Time Trials and as a
respected coach for many OBC members. One immediately should mention his side-kick Alex
McKnight who regularly assists. A big thank You to both.

But Les, your suggestion to have Jim elected there might be a problem,ha,ha,...he
is.not very diplomatic, he runs a 'tight ship'. Right Avery(last TT) !

As for lack of volunteers I have to disagree with you - you hav'nt been attending for
most of the summer : there are lots of volunteers, often too many, eager to help. I'm
one of them.

Sally, thanks for your input. I know you and Paul and Rick Sudac are opposed to
changes.WHO WANTS CHANGES ? Please speak up. Is there so little interest in the
Handicap Time Trial - if yes - why have one ?

Of course but we can't act on rumours. So we'll wait to see the

another issue and I wouldn't be surprised to see changes, but other

No but there are some complex issues related to trail use and we would
need to have some expertise and research done to take a position. Alan
Anderson has been our unofficial guide on MTB issues and we leave it to
him and others to suggest what positions to take but so far we haven't
taken any. That doesn't mean we won't but NCMBA is probably better
qualified. As you probably know, it has been our practice not to
automatically rubber stamp some other organization's advocacy.

[obc] Aug 20 Women's Time Trial Results

2002-08-20 Thread mcinnisc

It was a very nice night, and 18 women came out to ride. The top three
riders had finish times within 14 seconds of one another - Ellen
Pazdzior was first with 23:18, Nicole LaViolette was second with 23:25,
and Cynthia Clark, who took another 25 seconds off of her personal best,
was third with 23:32.

Amongst the others with personal season's bests were our new rider
Alison Ingham (30:54), Katrina Burton with 30:18 (11 seconds off),Nancy
Leigh-Smith with 28:13 (48 seconds off for an all-time PB), Treena
Grevatt with 27:03 (a 39 second improvement), Lucie Boudreau with 27:08
(a 17 second drop), Joan Potter with 27:07 (1 second down), and Lisa
Hebert with 25:05 (a 14 second improvement).

You may see the results at

RE: [obc] gatineau park

2002-08-20 Thread Derek J Medland

NCMBA certainly means well, but they have neither the commitment, membership
base, prestige nor history that the OBC can take pride in to effect change
at the levels of bureaucracy it takes to deal with Mr Beaudry and friends.

Though I have been doubted, I can verify trail access is indeed threatened,
I have seen the two year proposals. More than two of the most popular 'bike
only' trails are being turned into main and shared access trails. Shared
access, as those of you that mountainbike as well as roadbike will agree,
means 5+ feet wide, poor drainage patterns, and absolutely terrible
construction materials, more suited for driveways than cycling paths.

Certainly if there was ever a time that the OBC needs to take a stand, it is
to represent cyclists' best interests in the Gatineau Park. I will do what I
can to share information on this topic as it comes available. I will
include any interested parties in an event, petition, and media coverage to
bring this to light, into the public eye so we can have a singular unified
voice from the cycling community as a whole.

Sincerely

Derek.
