Does it work if you run `kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental` in a terminal?

How do you close it? By clicking on the active icon, or using Settings - Show

By clicking on the icon. I want the sidebar to be shown so that I can select

I don't have the debug info so the crash logs might be irrelevant. However it's
really easy to reproduce.

No, in a terminal after running 'kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental', okular will
run, but still does not open pdf's.
