Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Results list of the Call Number (Shelf Browse) list

2015-02-23 Thread Donald Butterworth
Colleagues,

Because of all the interest expressed in this thread I have created the
following wishlist bug.

Create a “list view” for Call Number (Shelf Browse) results lists.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/1424690

Create a list display results screen, which is similar in appearance to
other Evergreen search results screens, for the Call Number (Shelf Browse)
search. Each title retrieved should display at least the following data
elements. Call Number, Title, Author, and Publication Date.

Please be encouraged to add your thoughts and comments.

 Thanks, Elaine.

Based on that, it seems that (with appropriate styling and integration)
the backend behind the old slimpac call number browse does, indeed, fill
the need and pretty well matches your definition of a shelf list. Here are
 a couple example URLs:

 non-repeating area of call numbers
 http://webby.evergreencatalog.com/opac/extras/browse/html/call_number/-/PZ6

 area with repeating values
 http://webby.evergreencatalog.com/opac/extras/browse/html/call_number/-/FIC

Of course, as a simple demo site, the cataloging and normalization of call
numbers is not what a cataloger would provide. Note: the Display Fields
work that is pending inclusion would allow improved sorting of repeated
 call number rows.

A real shelflist would display call number, title, author, publisher,
edition, and pub date in a format that indicates where the call number you
wish to assign falls within the list of titles on the shelf (shelflisting
from a cataloging perspective). The cataloger can then easily scan the
surrounding titles to make sure the call number is correct, isn’t
duplicated, and follows shelflisting local practice. From this standpoint,
the shelf list in Evergreen isn’t real – it doesn’t provide a cataloger
with enough information to properly assign a call number. Since many public
libraries don’t have the complex shelflisting rules that academics have,
and we don’t care if we use the same call number over and over and over
again, the lack of real shelflisting functionality in Evergreen wasn’t an
issue until more academic libraries came on board. Having good shelflisting

I like having multiple ways to look at the same info, so a list view would
 be a great addition.

What I'd REALLY like is a single-row horizontal widget that you can scroll
back and forth so it shows the books in question as if they were lined up
 on an actual shelf.

What Elaine said ☺

Thanks Elaine for the detailed response. This is exactly the information to
describe ‘a real shelf list’ that answers my hasty post. Our cataloguers have
been referring to an outdated shelf list from a previous system to classify
certain publications to ensure call numbers are being created properly.

We would love to see this feature also!

I forgot about the slimpac… This is very close, in terms of display, and I
could see with tweaking where it would be visually what we would need. I don’t
know how Evergreen handles LCC numbers so I don’t know if shelflisting rules
are already in place or if they would have to be scoped out.

This would also be a very handy way to check if the correct cover art is
associated with a title while you were verify call numbers.

Thanks, Mike!

Thanks, Elaine.

Based on that, it seems that (with appropriate styling and integration) the
backend behind the old slimpac call number browse does, indeed, fill the
need and pretty well matches your definition of a shelf list. Here are a
couple example URLs:

non-repeating area of call numbers

http://webby.evergreencatalog.com/opac/extras/browse/html/call_number/-/PZ6

area with repeating values

http://webby.evergreencatalog.com/opac/extras/browse/html/call_number/-/FIC

Of course, as a simple demo site, the cataloging and normalization of call
numbers is not what a cataloger would provide. Note: the Display Fields
work that is pending inclusion would allow improved sorting of repeated call
number rows.

From this standpoint,
the shelf list in Evergreen isn’t real – it doesn’t provide a cataloger with
enough information to properly assign a call number. Since many public
libraries don’t have the complex shelflisting rules that academics have, and
we don’t care if we use the same call number over and over and over again,
the lack of real shelflisting functionality in Evergreen wasn’t an issue
until more academic libraries came on board. Having good shelflisting
capability will allow Evergreen to continue to appeal to a broad spectrum of
libraries.

I like having multiple ways to look at the same info, so a list view would be a

What I'd REALLY like is a single-row horizontal widget that you can scroll back

The feature list is often more useful than screenshots of other ILSes,
especially proprietary ones. For reasons that I think you can imagine many
developers are leery of being handed things from commercial ILSes and told

nine books confusing, and I know I am not alone in this. What's more, it
restricts you to only seeing 9 call numbers at a time, which can make for
lots of clicking!

Ideally the user would be able to choose between displaying either one line
per call number or one line per bibliographic record. In the former
situation only the call number should be shown, while in the latter it
would be sensible to show information from the record such as title and
author. If the system were to only do one of these, however, the first
option would definitely be my preference. Otherwise it would be useless for
seeing the sequence of call numbers wherever a library assigns many records
the same number.

Slightly different usage type, but TADL has something like that:
http://catalog.tadl.org/. Theirs also happens to be the most user-friendly and
inviting Evergreen catalog landing page out there, at least of the ones I’ve

Yes! That's exactly the usage that patrons would love to see with the shelf
browser (IMHO).

There are some third party widgets (LibraryThing makes one I believe) and
various javascript tutorials to do pretty / visual things like this with static
booklists. It would be cool to extend the idea to a shelf browser.

2015-01-16 Thread Hardy, Elaine
While I do agree that this would be good for patrons, catalogers would love
to have a version of shelf browse that allows them to easily and quickly
shelf list – place their call number in shelf list order to ensure they
haven’t duplicated their number (where libraries don’t duplicate call
numbers) and ensure they have it collocated correctly with other similar
works in their collection. This view is better than the current grid for
that; but, a browse list of call numbers and titles/authors would be better.
I would love to see both.

Yes! That's exactly the usage that patrons would love to see with the shelf
browser (IMHO).

There are some third party widgets (LibraryThing makes one I believe) and
various javascript tutorials to do pretty / visual things like this with
static booklists. It would be cool to extend the idea to a shelf browser.

All -

If anyone wants to see how our previous ILS catalog did the call number
browse:

http://library.asbury.edu/uhtbin/cgisirsi/?ps=PMnTOlJylx/AC/270510061/61/78/X

Is it possible to recreate something similar in Evergreen? And make it
better of course!

And for other examples:
http://catalog.lib.ncsu.edu/browse?callNumber=ps+32format=listcallNumberSearch=true

Here is a collection of eight of them:
http://musingsaboutlibrarianship.blogspot.com/2013/06/a-survey-of-library-virtual-shelves-8.html#.VLlvtsm8-Xg

And here is one that I am completely fascinated with and would love to
replicate somehow:
https://lucas.liberty.edu/vwebv/holdingsInfo?bibId=159387searchId=1026recPointer=7recCount=10
I realize that they are probably using the virtual shelf representation
from Library Thing. That is not what is cool. Scroll to the very bottom of
the screen and there is a little link for an image of the actual book location
on a map. The blue highlighted region / shelf on the map is where the book
is. Nice.

Surely we can do this! The shelf browse at least. But let's start with a
simple call number list first. :-)

Thanks!

Sure, anything's possible. Having discussions like this one is a great
way to get consensus around a shared vision. As with anything in
open-source software, of course, it helps if you have a developer who is
willing to work on the shared vision or the funds to hire a developer.

For what it's worth, MassLNC got a quote to implement this -
http://masslnc.cwmars.org/node/2590 - a couple of years ago, but decided
not to implement it. I would be willing to share the details of the
quote with anyone who is interested in implementing it, but, by this

Have a nice weekend!

Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Results list of the Call Number (Shelf Browse) list

2015-01-15 Thread Mike Rylander
Janet,

That's a good (and important) point to bring up. The question is this: are
we talking about a virtual shelf or a call number listing? If the former,
they'd be duplicated (one version of the callnumber per bib with items at
or below the search location), and if the latter, they could be collapsed
(count of bibs with items at or below the search location using that string
as the callnumber label). The former supports book jackets and shelf
listing (approximately), the latter is just an index of labels.

There's room for both, IMO.

Thoughts?

It shouldn't bet terribly hard, since it's been done before in the old
