Mike, thanks for answering, but I have another question (not being intimate 
with 
the CHAP details): Is "nothing" equivalent to the empty string, or is it a kind 
of 
attribute that isn't sent? AFAIK: The remote CHAP partner will use the username 
to 
select the shared secret for authentication. I have no idea whether it can work 
without one.
