Is TransactionSynchronizationRegistry used?

I'm trying to get openjpa running in geronimo and wonder how openjpa  
locates the TransactionSynchronizationRegistry.  Greping for  
TransactionSynchronizationRegistry I don't see it used anywhere in  
the code base.  What am I missing?
