Hi Peter The codes are called plus codes - meaning they must have a "+" in them!
If you have the code 8GC2CMXR+X6, then to just get the area code, you use 8GC20000+ <http://plus.code/map/8GC20000+> (zeros in front of the "+" indicate "no digit"). At the moment the site will display "0000+ Antipata 280 84, Greece" for that - that's a bug, I'll fix it as soon as I can.
