Perhaps a coincidence, I had 1.1.8 javac coredump on me when JAVA_HOME wasn't
set.

Something that may be releavant to tracking this down is which ImageMagick are
you using and did you build it or download the binaries?

this behavior. Given that my aix 4.3.2/xlc build (also) did not share your
build's reported misbehavior--coredump on the missing file extension to
WriteImage-- is it convenient for you to make a clean build?
