Thanks!
A place to start is a place to start, and an stable server release is
the most urgent one among all the other options.
Some people is talking about the server-desktop question, I
particularly liked the old Solaris software groups concept (reduced
network, core, end user, entire)... woulnt
not sure if it helps any, or even if it helps in
OpenSolaris/Illumos/OpenIndiana ...
we've had problems in the past with usb devices and memory allocation
... admittedly this was when we had quite a few devices in the system,
but we had to set the ehci:ehci_qh_pool_size in /etc/system:

Hi Jon,
Many thanks for the info.
In the mean time, I've bitten the bullet and bought a cheaper PCIe E-sata
card. It'll be a while before it gets here, so time will tell!
But thanks for coming back with that. I'll keep it handy in case it comes to
it.
If any of my log files would help anyone
Thank you very much for such a detailed response, actually yes,
Openindiana-desktop, is more clear than the LiveCD, it makes sense.
I will read the links you sent.
Thanks again for all your work.

Good suggestions, but now I've got both backup pools in trouble :-)
I've also got another issue. Because they're degraded, I can't import them,
which means I can't destroy them, either.
I can import by ID number, but I can't destroy by ID number.
A reboot didn't help, either.

Sorry i forgot

I had another drive that was one of that old pool, so I ran a little test.
A relabel didn't work. ZFS still thought the drive was part of the old pool.
However, re-writing the partition table and running an all free hog did work.
In this case, it looks like I'm going to have to export the data
No! (the vote has begun :)
I feel that Live CD is still a server OS.
I suggest names like
- Gnome distribution; (Actually Live CD is even better name - it
gives an idea that you can boot from CD not touching your HDD content);
- Command line distribution.
Dmitry.

For what I know they are supposed to be transparent to the operating
system/drivers but I can also testify that they have been nothing but
problems for me too.

I was thinking in terms of the installer presenting choices. If no choices are
selected then the minimal installation with no extras layers gets installed.
you might also call this expert mode as only the basics are there and anything
else had to be installed.
