need. Interestingly enough, on this install, the package manager is
borked. It will start from the command line with pfexec, but not from
the System-Administration menu. Easy enough to get around, but it makes
me wonder how
... but you are sure that it might not be your DVD, RAM or mainboard that's
giving you a hard time? I've never heard of similar problems with 151a8 so far
on this list!

Yep. I knew about this, and reset the root password right away. And this
problem was irrelevant as the system had no GUI; Gnome is what I was
trying to install.

Well, the first command shows a big problem right away. The DVD didn't
create /.volsetid!! sigh
I copied the one from the DVD, but then it didn't boot at all. Using this:
