and 1 are in Input/Output. I didn't reboot, reconfigure, but I was
playing with switching to the PCM device. The Preferences pane/app hung
for a while, and when I got control back, there everything is. Weird.

This must be a FAQ, but I can't see the solution to this.
For some reason I don't understand, my Intel NUC has two sound devices,
and the one that works is /dev/sound/1, not /dev/sound/0 (as seen from
running audiotest). This seems to be a common problem.
