Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] pkg utility broken on /hipster (illumos-4e4d1bad19)
Quick fix: remove /usr/gnu/lib/amd64/libstdc++.so.6. libreoffice actidentally works after this, as it is 32-bit. I'm sure that the proper sollution depends on SFE will - I suppose it should move out of system /usr/gnu directory (or better just use system compiler). Currently, on OI and Solaris ncurses, binutils and bison use it. ncurses is likely the most difficult one, at it a) has a lot of consumers; b) has conflicts with illumos-gate-provided curses library. Hi. With several packages which have alternative implementation there's difference between 'system default', which is set on pkg level and 'oi-userland default', which is set in oi-userland Makefiles. We compile db-dependent packages with minimal version of available DB library. In such way we are more sure that it'll work with version against which it was compiled and later. [OpenIndiana-discuss] DNS server startup script security issue
Hi. We’ve identified security issue in bind DNS server startup scripts. Users who use the BIND DNS server should upgrade to the very latest version, service/network/dns/bind@9.14.3-2018.0.0.0 9.14.3:20190628T145611Z, not only to obtain the latest version of BIND, but to also include an additional OpenIndiana-specific privilege reduction for BIND processes. Before this version update, BIND ran with additional privileges beyond what it was supposed to have, which might have allowed easier access to the operating system files after a BIND exploit. The issue was introduced in https://github.com/OpenIndiana/oi-userland/commit/621cff1a7713726f23a5e482ffadcdbb418976b7 . named was run with extended privileges (via ppriv), including file_dac_read, which were not dropped even after setid to "named" user and was fixed in https://github.com/OpenIndiana/oi-userland/commit/b5aecf8134403a49b30956c265bbac2ca3ef308c . You're talking about the GSSAPI *host* key exchange, correct? Not GSSAPI authentication within ssh? We have MIT Kerberos here and I sometimes use GSSAPI authentication, but I've never particularly cared if the patch/extension for host key exchange is included or not. Honestly, if it's a maintenance burden, I could get by without any GSSAPI support in openssh, but right now I'm assuming you're talking about the host portion, not user authentication via GSSAPI. Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] dual boot OI-hipster /windows 7
Hello. I don't know of ready-to-use document and advise you to check the procedure in VM first. Currently installer doesn't know how to install system on GPT partition. So, you need to create ZFS partition manually and use text installer to install system there. Be careful to avoid destroying Windows loader. Likely, you'll have to manually copy /boot/loader64.efi to /efi/boot/bootx64.efi of GPT boot partition and /boot/loader32.efi to /efi/boot/bootia32.efi. Different question is if your BIOS allows you to select EFI loader. When illumos loader sees your OI installation you'll have to add chainload entry for Windows system. In case when you use MBR partitioning, loader can install system to existing MBR partition. [OpenIndiana-discuss] OpenIndiana Confluence security incident
Hi. Our infrastructure was too long without attention. As a result, confluence was compromised. Confluence runs on w01.openindiana.everycity.co.uk, together with main site and exim/mailman. 1) We know, confluence was compromised (expected date of infection - Apr 17). The malware was detected at 8th May about 21:00 UTC. It looked as one described in https://b4d.sablun.org/blog/2019-04-19-ignoring-atlassian-confluence-security-advisories/ . The issue was a security issue in confluence - https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/confluence-security-advisory-2019-03-20-90264.html . We beleive it wasn't a targeted attack - just some more-or-less stupid bot, aiming at confluence, mining bitcoins (this part didn't work in illumos zone as expected) and pehaps, collecting botnet. 2) This zone contains mailing list software and web server, other services were not impacted (it didn't have access to git repos or packages). Resolution steps. 1) Malware was completely removed and affected plugins were disabled at May 9 at about 4:00 UTC. 2) Update to latest confluence version took some time, as a) our confluence license has expired and I had to contact Atlassian to get new one; b) it required updating Apache and JDK. 3) Update to Confluence 6.15.4 was completed at May 10 at about 08:00 UTC. Wordpress at openindiana.org was updated to 5.2. Further steps. Given that actually nobody has cared enough for this infrastructure server, we suggest the following steps. 1) Moving all valuable information from wiki to https://docs.openindiana.org and http://github.com/OpenIndiana/oi-userland/ docs directory. 2) Preserve wiki for now just for development purposes. 3) Completely decommission wiki once migration to oi-docs is finished. P.S. Due to this security incident OpenIndiana 2019.04 snapshot was delayed for longer time than expected. Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Audio Hardware Detection
Hi. On pulseaudio update we've lost patch to use oss, which was earlier available. I've restored it when looked at the issue with mate-volume-control. Does mate-volume-control allow you to switch audio device (output tab)? I've been reviewing the notes that I kept while developing these changes. I see that I did change output modules. The initial problem was that both HAVE_OSS_OUTPUT and HAVE_SOLARIS were defined during compilation of pulseaudio. I tracked this problem down to these lines in the Makefile: CONFIGURE_OPTIONS += --enable-oss-output CONFIGURE_OPTIONS += --enable-solaris You were supposed to pick one. To correct the problem, I changed the first one to: CONFIGURE_OPTIONS += --disable-oss-output It then built a correct version of module-detect.so . That must have reversed your earlier change. Then I proceed to make the OSS module work on illumos. -- -Gary Mills--refurb--Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada- ___ openindiana-discuss mailing list openindiana-discuss@openindiana.org https://openindiana.org/mailman/listinfo/openindiana-discuss
Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Audio Hardware Detection
Hi, Gary. I've looked through your patches, attached to https://www.illumos.org/issues/9732 and have one big question. We've switched from mod_solaris to mod_oss precisely for this reason - when mod_oss is used, pulseaudio presents user a list of devices to choose from and mate-volume-control provides GUI for this. When it is not used, it's unclear how user should select audio device. So I'm a bit surprised that you want to switch pulseaudio to mod_solaris (which, as I understand, your changes do). Please, explain your reasons for preferring this module. What hardware is it? > I cannot find any logs related to the audio hardware detection as well. > > Any advise on how to proceed to try and get OI to find the audio hardware? There are two possible problems here. First of all, the computer may have two sets of audio hardware. Pulseaudio only sends audio to the first one. It may be non-functioning or may not be the one that you are using. This could happen, for example, if your computer has built-in HDMI audio and video along with a built-in three-jack audio device. `prtconf -v | grep sound' in a terminal window will show the audio devices. I've submitted Pulseaudio patches that allow you to select audio devices, but so far they haven't been integrated into OI. The second possible problem is simply that you may have the audio volume set to zero or muted. In that case, you won't hear any sound, even though everything is working. If the volume is set too low, but not to zero, try `tput bel' in a terminal window. If you even hear a faint beep, it is working. -- -Gary Mills--refurb--Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada- ___ openindiana-discuss mailing list openindiana-discuss@openindiana.org https://openindiana.org/mailman/listinfo/openindiana-discuss ___ openindiana-discuss mailing list openindiana-discuss@openindiana.org https://openindiana.org/mailman/listinfo/openindiana-discuss
Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] installing pthreads for compiling
It seems there is read-only ext4 fuse module - https://github.com/gerard/ext4fuse . The more interesting issue that on a lot of systems which I support I have ext4 on LVM, so I thought plain ext4 fuse driver was of limited use. I recently pushed an update to the fuse code, and I expect it to work properly. In fact, I am using ntfs over fuse for nearly everything (documentation, source code, music, backups, etc.) shareable among Windows, Linux and OpenIndiana. There is an old implementation of ext2 based on fuse, the current state of which I do not know. IMHO, as fuse and ext2 did not get significant changes for years, I would expect reviving it to be a simple task. Upgrading it to read-only ext4 should even be possible with reasonable effort, so the real challenge would be to provide read-write ext4 (even with no journalling). I would check the wiki first, to see if there are updated instructions for the conversion, but I can't verify whether there's anything there for MATE since for some reason the OI wiki has failed to load the last few times I've tried to connect. If you can't find anything on the wiki, the mailing list thread about switching to MATE happened in mid-August 2016, so hopefully that helps you find it in the archives. Back when I switched, the pkg:/mate_install was a meta-package that pulled in the majority of MATE. That may have only been valid during a (now-expired) transition phase, so I don't know if that's still a valid path to get most of what you need. [OpenIndiana-discuss] [HEADS UP] Apache 2.4 is 64-bit-only now
Hi. With merge of PR #4800 Apache 2.4 has become 64-bit-only. This is a big breaking change, because we’ve reworked Apache directory layout and configuration to facilitate IPS switch to Python 3.5. Python 3.5 is 64-bit-only, and we had an unpleasant choice either rewrite depot and sysrepo configuration to always use 64-bit Apache version or make Apache 2.4 64-bit-only. Also to avoid ugliness which was necessary to allow users transparently switch from 32-bit or 64-bit version with existing configs to new 64-bit only version and possible incompatibilities, we decided to break current Apache 2.4 installations on upgrade, so that administrators could immediately see the issue. Now you know, your apache server is broken. What should you do? - Don’t panic. - Read apache24(1m). -If you’ve changed /etc/apache2/2.4/httpd.conf, /etc/apache2/2.4/httpd.conf.new will contain new version necessary for updated Apache2.4 to work correctly. So, merge two files manually, preserving your local changes. As you can see, /etc/apache2/2.4/conf.d/modules-*.load files have gone, and you have to include LoadModule directives either in /etc/apache2/2.4/conf.d/*.conf files or in /etc/apache2/2.4/httpd.conf directly -mpm_event module is used by default (if you don’t overwrite it in svc:/network/http:apache24 instance httpd/MPM property). So, fix your configuration files to avoid relying on IfModule prefork.c. -64bit is not set now, so fix configuration files relying on it Happy updating! Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] VirtualBox
Hi. 1) qemu-kvm is documented - https://wiki.openindiana.org/oi/7.3+KVM 2) starting from 2018.10 you can use KVM zones - https://github.com/OpenIndiana/pkg5/blob/oi/doc/kvm.md It would be good if someone moved this documentation to oi-docs, but so far there were no volunteers to do this. Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Hipster 10 / 2018 Mate desktop 1. 2 -changing password utility
Hi. From what I see, mate-about-me expects passwd to write input/output to stdin/stdout. But our passwd uses pam, which in its turn uses tty. So, mate-about-me waits for passwd to say something and doesn't see when it tries to interact with terminal (and possibly fails). Please, file an issue. Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Updating Java
Hi. First of all, you run on something especially outdated. Seriously consider replacing this server with something up to date. Secondly, these are 1) poold resource manager, which allows you to migrate resources between resource pools based on pre-defined policies (and likely not needed in your environment) 2) Sun dhcp server and it's management tool (they have been removed from illumos-gate for several years). If you don't use it, I think, you can also remove them. Yes, qemu-kvm has been compiled without SDL/x11 support since end of 2016. Nobody has noticed it, but I don't think that avoiding dependency on 2 libraries (sdl and libx11) is so noticable now, so enabled it back.
