Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] openindiana-discuss Digest, Vol 94, Issue 2

2018-05-02 Thread Bob Pasken
Still having no luck attempting to run OI-hipster on a Sun Ultra-40m2
and on a Sun Sunfire X4600. On both machines I get the same PCI error
initialization error messages at boot and then the system hangs. Tomass
Soone had a partail solution for the X4600 back a few months ago. I
hoped that a complete solution would have made into this release.

Hi,

I did the real installation on my Lenovo T400 and all works perfectly.
The only problem is the sound. I don't have any sound. Even if the drivers
are installed.

Thank you very much for the clarification.

I am coming from FreeBSD (since 2002, both on servers and workstations).

I am just getting my feet wet with openindiana.

I am studying Pro OpenSolaris, and getting to OpenSolaris Bible later,
having my first install on a ThinkPad W541. I must say, I was impressed
on how smooth and flawless the install was, in comparison to Win 10,
FreeBSD 11 or even Linux Mint.

From the overall feel of it I know this is home.

I would like very much to contribute some packages, when (if ever) I'll
have enough expertise.

If you are studying the books you will definately have enough expertise.
The Packaging is made with Custom makefiles based on the current
solaris-gate.

You can find documentation here:

The Source here: https://github.com/OpenIndiana/oi-userland

As I understand, then, it would be better to contribute to openindiana

repositories, as found here:https://www.openindiana.org/packages/

When the time will come, would I be able to "pester" people on this
list, in regards to creating new packages? Or better the oi-dev list?

the FreeBSD loader, *BUT* will run Grub based Hipster, FreeBSD, TrueOS,

loader I get 8 lines of "WARNING illegal PCI OFFSET" (may be the exact
wording) and the system hangs

Hi

Best is at least 1.5gb ram and a newer but not the newest processor.
The Problem is less that a maschine needs power to run OpenIndiana but
that we can not keep up with the latest drivers. I would go for an last
gen hardware.

I have it running on a HP Proliant Microserver Gen10 and I know that
Gen8 works well too.

Hope this helps

I'd like to suggest looking for a used HP Z400 on eBay. They're Solaris
certified. I picked up 3 for $100 each with 6 GB of DRAM, quad core 2.9 GHz
Xeon and 160 GB disk earlier this year. I already had one I'd bought a few
years ago. I needed one, but got the others for spares. The build quality is
excellent. Runs Hipster 2017.10 just fine.

After a ridiculous amount of work I've finally gotten Windows 7 and Debian
working as guests under VirtualBox. Performance on Windows is not quite
adequate for running SDRuno with my SDRplay RSP2 (audio stutters) but otherwise
is fine with 8 GB of DRAM. I installed a 3 in 2 iStar trayless disk enclosure
and am running three 2 TB disks (s0 = 100 GB, s1=rest) using a 3 way mirrored
rpool in s0 and a RAIDZ1 pool in s1.I mostly use the RSP2 for spectrum
analysis, so not a big deal. And I still have not tried to optimize
performance. Too much to do.

Have Fun!

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Multiple video cards and X11

2017-02-04 Thread Bob Pasken
I have a Dell T605 with the motherboard ATI-ES1000 and an Nvidia nv-290
PCI-e card. Under windows and Linux I can run the system off the Nvidia
card, by shutting the system off, plugging the monitor into the Nvidia
card and booting. All is well. I do the same thing with the OpenIndiana
Hipster and the system boots, gets to the point where it starts X11 and
then reboots. Nothing other than the usual boot messages appear in
/var/adm/messages and nothing in the xsession logs. Any ideas?

Cheers
