Hi, thanks for testing the completely obsolete OUTDATED packages.

As I reported to list already on September 22nd it is clear that you got these
errors.
Shortly after I sent follow up mails and explained how I got these issues fixed.

Sadly I didn't have time for unapid work since then (because Shot-USA-style
Capitalism is attempting to terrorize me by means of unpaiable bills!!!) , but
stay calm and happy aka tuned, as soon as I somehow CAN i shall gladly upload
the other stuff as mentioned time and again from my TODO list.

Unfortunately everybody expects expects expects, but how the contributors like
Alp, Aurelien, Ken (or myself) etc etc etc pay their bills - nobody ever asks
that question.

Here my old Sept22nd email:

I return as soon as I can, count on my word.

Cheers and as said, thanks for testing and reporting (even if you missed my
earlier messages in the endless stream of daily news, which I hence don't blame
on you).

2016-10-05 Thread bentahyr
I did some tests with 2 different USB Webcams.
To sum up, USB passthrough didn't work but webcams abstraction from virtualbox
worked for the logitech one

== Microsoft LifeCam Studio
Works fine with Cheese
ben@whitestar:~$ vboxm list usbhost
Host USB Devices:

UUID: 538da37f-1ea6-4226-bd66-17cdd14e738e

Address:0x45e:0x772:275:/pci@0,0/pci1028,21e@1d,7/miscellaneous@4

But bizarrely it isn't recognized by Virtualbox webcam abstraction :
ben@whitestar:~$ vboxm list webcams
Video Input Devices: 1
 ""

An empty item appears in the GUI that if I select crashes all the VMs running!!!

Passthrough fails with an error message (see next one for error message)
But device seems to be captured :

Hi,
Install went on fine.
I just needed to add the SMAP setting in the /etc/system file

Nice splash and "About" screen.
One thing to notice is that the Guest addition ISO is only offering Solaris
version and the ISO itself is rather small compared to the VBox Windows version.

I'll do some test using USB passthrough later on.

Best regards,
Ben

Hi Aurélien,

man! That is outstanding.
Yes, it was this typical empty probe issue indeed.
On my agenda it was the last thing to look into, so DTrace support might not
have made it into the initial IPS release without your help.
That's just cool, and this then also means we can definitely ship the DTrace
extension pack which is included in the OSE edition src and which does get
built without issues, good to know, I add it back into the manifest.

Thanx!

If this is related the empty probe issue then I can send a patch to
you, I built the DTrace extension.

Hi Pedrag,

why so complicated with downloading Oracle's full package and then pkgtrans?
;)
In fact it is even easier, but as long as I'm not 100.000% sure about licensing
(redistributable or not) I cannot do that.
After we checked the Oracle licenses, we will see.

Technically it is all compatible and all just there for download in
http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/$(COMPONENT_VERSION)/$(COMPONENT_ARCHIVE
) , not only the guest additions but also the ext-pack, for all versions,
always (hence easily fetachable in an automated way in hipster-userland:

Hi Predrag,

you are very spot-on with your observation and indeed it is an important
feature to have a complete guest additions iso.
Now, I already responded to that issue but I now know more than I did back then.
Here the old conversation:

Meanwhile I thought about it: While what I said is indeed 100% accurate for the
lack of the (general) ext-pack in the OSE (the OSE only generates a
DTrace-extension pack, which I didn't ship because DTrace had to be disabled to
get Vbox5 built), the guest additions are a better story.

ls -al VirtualBox-5.1.6/src/VBox/ExtPacks

Technically speaking it is *clear* that on a Solaris host only Solaris drivers
aka guest additions can get built natively. Windows drivers must be built on a
Windows devel machine.
But then again I can't find Windows guest editions in the src tree (which would
be buildable on MS-Windows) :

Hi Мартин,

Just small observation regarding this package:
/opt/VirtualBox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso contains ONLY solaris additions...

I have fixed that "problem":

* Downloading
http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.1.6/VirtualBox-5.1.6-110634-SunOS.tar.gz
* Running command: "pkgtrans VirtualBox-5.1.6-SunOS-amd64-r110634.pkg ."
(got pkg file from tar above)
* pfexec cp SUNWvbox/root/opt/VirtualBox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso
/opt/VirtualBox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso (change was immediately visible
to booted guest)

Once more: thanks for package :-)

With best regards.

BTW, here my official confirmation (perhaps for the wiki then? I will also put
this into README for the src release to my personal github for everybody to
review and fetch) : The trick provided by Christian Meier to get Vbox5 running
as root (without the QT problem in Vbox_5_ if run as root) *WORKS* and *VOILA*,
suddenly usb devices (of the real host) do get listed for attachment :-)

No network cable or anything is needed, just locally:

A) ssh -X localhost

and then

B) su (without -)

C) /opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox

And bingo! USB devices are suddenly all there and also non-USB CD/DVD
passthrough works as root!
This is required to install copy-protected optical media to MS-Win guests, such
as in my case the Russian Language learning software requiring not only a
vendor's genuine serial number but also running authentication checks against
the physical (!!!) DVD itself.

I could start as root if I tunnel the X-Windows

It makes no different if I connect from Windows (putty x-forward) or do
an 'ssh -X' on the Solaris.

May this work for the moment as a work-around

Мартин,
The test I've done so far are on Hipster/illumos-cb3c687 on a Dell T5400.
The ISO from the windows version works fine as well as the extension pack
installs fine.
I'll see later on with a different hardware (more recent) and USB Webcam +
sound.

Don't forget to put "Rest/Have a beer" in you task list.

It should be permissions based.
Only giving whatever access to the respective devices on the host doesn't work,
modifications regarding suid against /opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox are also not
doing the trick.
In the past with vbox4 test runs with vbox as root made USB and on another
aspect also optical media passthrough (on non-USB) work.

The curiosity with Vbox5.0.x and 5.1.x (no matter if Oracle bins or self-built)
is, that you cannot properly run vbox5 as root (for a short test), because the
Qt GUI gets messed up and no text is shown. Quite odd.
But more on that after the TODO list was completed.
Life is, tough. And short, especially with such hobbies.

I'm looking forward to more test results, especially USB.
For me it doesn't work at the moment, but Oracle's binary package also doesn't
work for me.
That's still a problematic area which needs extra reviews.

Best regards,

Hi,
Install went on fine.

HI Martin,
I can also report complete success, this is brilliant, thank you. :)

Kind regards

Thanks a lot for this package! It works great! I have checked it with a
WindowsXP image
that use from time to time. Localization works and now WindowsXP shuts down
properly.
With Oracle contributed binaries I had to manually shut down VB...

A.S.

Hello,

as promised here finally the binary SVR4 package for use on
Hipster/OpenIndiana, OpenSXCE, XStreamOS or TribbliX from 2015 or newer.
The ips stuff still needs some polishing and I release the src hipster-userland
integration later today or next night after first some sleep.
Yes, I *do* mean it when I say community team work (as you see from mentioning
friendly distros).
And more: I took the freedom to incorporate Jim Klimov's excellent
https://github.com/jimklimov/vboxconfig_sh/blob/master/vboxconfig.sh
Ahh and btw, I fixed the
/platform/i86pc/kernel/drv/amd64/vboxusbmon
/platform/i86pc/kernel/drv/amd64/vboxusb
problem and now the (Oracle created/Solaris11.3 designed) driver loads on
Illumos again, so thanks to this plus vboxconfig.sh postinstall completes
without error.

Here the test bins (src diffs, Makefile and ips manifest to follow soon) :

http://opensxce.org/virtualbox5_qt4/testbins/

-1#.) Requires Hipster 2015++ (such as with a libc compatible to
illumos-f83b46b) and /usr/lib/qt/4.8

#0.) Remove all previous SUNWvbox related packages (in the past userland bins
and kernel modules were split into 2 packages).
Now it is enough to:
# yes|pkgrm SUNWvbox

which will look like this:

# yes|pkgrm SUNWvbox

The following package is currently installed:
   SUNWvbox Oracle VM VirtualBox
 (i386) 5.1.6,REV=2016.09.19.10.01.110634
