I believe it is as Alexander said: "illumos-gate currently lacks support of UEFI vga console (so you are limited to serial console and X11". So, if you want to boot in UEFI mode, enable "Enable ssh" mode which skips language/keyboard dialog in VGA console and gets you straight to X11:
