redhat report it looks like the issue is not solved this way.
Could you clarify "the symbols we need"? I'm currently stripping with
--remove-section=.comment --remove-section=.note --strip-debug, so this
might be too much.
the openjdk-9 packages now have the status of a release candidate in
17.10. No need to remove them.
If packages pull in openjdk-9 by default, then they have wrong
dependencies. You should file bug reports for these packages to get the
dependencies fixed.

If I remember correctly this has to do with update-alternatives not considering
anything outside of /usr/share/man ... but my memory might be wrong. Is your
configuration not installing man pages by default? Does installation of man-db
help?

I'm thinking to just disable openjdk builds on the mips* platforms. The feedback
both patches in comments #1 and #2 don't apply, other patches need back
porting.
