variables and macros need not be called '.rpmmacros'. Some suggestions:

  #) Filename      Advantage
  --------------------------
  1) .rpmmacros    Consistency with native RPM specification
  2) macros        Consistency with preexisting OpenPKG names
  3) rpmmacros     Combination of both RPM and OpenPKG standards,
                   and consistency with outstanding bootstrap standard

I propose we choose alternative 3, because it matches the file named
'rpmmacros' placed in /prefix/etc/openpkg/ by the bootstrap program.
If there are no objections or new suggestions I'll change the logic
from #1 to #3 in the next few days.
