+1 Melanie. Why are we trying to reinvent the wheel? Since OpenSim, (also called the 3d web), is a server/service, similar to Apache or IIS, (the 2d web), can we just follow their example for configuration files? IIS has a web/gui based setup, which I assume is more than we are ready to do with

Paul, I know some people "boink" a configuration file (I've done this once or twice myself) where you make a configuration change, and then suddenly OpenSim fails to start (or crashes). Personally, I just copy my current "opensim.ini" file to "opensim.ini.bak" (before making any changes) and the

because many people run their servers from inside their bin/ directory, and if it's named OpenSim.ini then any changes that are made to that file will get overwritten (not just overridden) at the next svn update. That's why it was renamed to OpenSim.ini.example -- originally, it was set to OpenSim

Has anyone notices how impossibly complicated, complex and unmaintainable this is going to become? Instead of demanding the user read a simple set of instructions, then do the RightThing, you try to do all their thinking for them, resulting in something that will make neither novice nor grid op
