A minimal OpenSolaris install for people with less than 700 megs of RAM in their computers already exists. It's called Milax and in graphical mode it uses the XFCE windowing environment which has a light footprint and puts minimal strain on your system resources. I run it on my laptop. Check it

Ah shoot, I just read that you already tried Milax and had a problem with it not being based on IPS. I guess you could look around at the other distros that are out there and see if you find anything you like. I think Belenix also supports the XFCE desktop, which should make things run faster
