This version number refers to the ABI version of the library.

I wish you had elaborated a bit on why it is intentional? Links to
an existing FAQ (if applicable to this specifically), or just
something you or one of the other people involved with openssl wrote
in response to a similar question. Not that I think it likely to be
changed, but simply for my own

Please review the proposed patch for /openssl-1.0.1g/crypto/opensslv.h
meant to correct a typo in the SHLIB_VERSION_NUMBER at the end of this
message.
Recently I compiled OpenSSL 1.0.1g and found that it numbers the
