FWIW on macOS:
If you use Homebrew and want/need OpenSSL 1.1.1 then `brew install
openssl@1.1`. If you want the 1.0.2x series `brew install openssl`
currently is & will likely remain attached to 1.0.2x for the foreseeable.
If you use MacPorts and want OpenSSL 1.0.2x then `sudo port install
openss

Latest build seems to be broken for me on OS X 10.10. If it matters
here, since the error is SSL related, I'm building against OpenSSL
1.0.1j which is configured without ssl2 ciphers but with ssl3 ciphers
enabled.

What kind of errors are you running into? And what version of Ubuntu
are you running?
Ubuntu & various other Linux distos don't match precisely the OpenSSL
release numbering format. They tend to patch the issue and then
release an update as say '1.0
