This is also one of the promises of OpenStack, btw: your loads on any cloud, interoperability, etc. But then again, the decision of which tool to use to manage the local groups needs to be left in the hands of the group itself. If you're comfortable with meetup, linkedin, google groups, your own hosted phpBB, whatever, use it. All we need is a place to surface all of these activities that happen around the world and that involve OpenStack. That said, some other items beyond meetup that could also help: * sharing curating capabilities - video, photos and slidedecks. You've got your YouTube and G+ Hangouts and slideshare... but curating past events and organizing info into consumable (and locatable) archive This is interesting: what would be the use case exactly? Something like: after the event, the coordinator adds to the portal the URL for pictures, slides, A/V recordings relevant for that event. Where you thinking something like this or more sophisticated? Lastly, about SSO and user identities. I see UG as having a dual role - preach to the choir and getting new converts - or have a forum for existing Openstack community members (developers, deployers and users) to interact in person, but also promote openstack to the uninitiated. An SSO system that will add a potential barrier for folks who are (not that I understand why in this day and age) reluctant to sign up providing any personal details (e.g. email address). I agree. I don't like forcing to create yet another login/password combo. I tend to believe that we should only require authentication for the managers/coordinators of the groups to get started. We may need to build something more sophisticated later on but we'll talk about it when that time comes. /stef -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~openstack-community Post to : openstack-community@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~openstack-community More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Re: [Openstack] [Compute] nova-compute does not show up as :-) in nova-manage service list
I tried 'virsh list', and the command hangs. At first i thought it was because of KVM, since the vm does not support it. I remember having the same problem with diablo, but it would only result in error when the instance was being launched on the compute service. So i changed libvirt_type=kvm to libvirt_type=qemu. However, the problem still remains: virsh list still hangs and compute refuses to leave the state XXX. Almost all of the libvirt issues I ran into were fixed by restarting libvirt, and on one occasion, rebooting the server. I narrowed some of the issues down to various libvirt bugs at the time, but never followed up after an Ubuntu update fixed the issues.. All that said, I tried 'virsh list', and the command hangs. sounds very familiar - as does your log output ;) Have you attempted to restart libvirt yet? Interesting.. I've never seen that before and honestly have no clue why root would fail, but a less privileged account would succeed. Also.. Re: [Openstack] [Dashboard] Can't access images/snapshots
It appears that nova volume is returning an error across the API which (somehow) is causing a retry across the API, ultimately resulting in the uncaught exception. That said, I'm stumped on what error would cause that offhand. I'd check your nova log (and also make sure you actually have the nova volume service running). Re: [Openstack] vlan network question
Yes it is possible to do everything over one interface, but it is probably better to separate traffic out over multiple vlans if you can. You could have rabbit and mysql on one vlan (call it the management vlan), and the public internet traffic/api on a separate vlan. Finally you could put all of the vms on their own vlan (or if you are using vlan mode as you say, then each project will get its own vlan). Re: [Openstack] [Dashboard] Can't access images/snapshots
The error means Horizon cannot parse the response it got from Nova endpoint. It is either the response returns an incorrect format or there is some error during the call to Nova endpoint. Re: [Openstack] SAN and Fibrechannel with OpenStack
I'm not sure that it would be particularly easy to make nova-volume support clustered filesystems; the current model only supports attaching a volume to a single instance at a time. Aside from that, it shouldn't be too hard to use fc as the data path instead of iscsi. We're looking at using iSER in a similar capacity. -nld On Wed, May 16, 2012 at 4:05 AM, Wolfgang Hennerbichler wolfgang.hennerbich...@risc-software.at wrote: dear openstack godfathers; I do plan to migrate from crappy vmware and some ibm based cloud stack to openstack and kvm. here's the thing: I am lucky enough to have decent hardware, all the compute nodes are interconnected via fibre channel. so I don't want and don't need iscsi. do you think I can make it with something like clvm? I read through the docs of openstack, but I am not really sure now if I can make clvm fly without hacking around in openstack (and nova-volume) too much, especially when it comes to live migration and so on... I realize OpenStack was not built for SAN and FC, but I would really like to hear your opinions on that. Re: [Openstack] nova-manage network create does not create the bridges/vlans immediately
Thanks Nathanael, so the bridges and vlans are created until the instance is created?, because my understanding was that the interfaces were created once the network create is applied, and the interface appears in nova-network node and nova-compute node, is it right? Re: [Openstack] There is no object-store endpoint on this auth server.
Just ran into this, the issue is that swift expects the user to be of the form TENANTNAME:USERNAME swift will accept the ST_USER env variable, so you can add something like this to your env: export ST_USER=openstackDemo:adminUser On Tue, May 8, 2012 at 8:42 AM, Shashi Kanth Boddula shashi@gmail.comwrote: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with Essex.
