It's not the same thing ... i don't want to deviate the discussion
though. Let me just say that for me data portability is a basic
requirement for any software, service, system, anything: my data, my
contacts, my content need to go with me when/where I decide to move it.
This is also one of the promises of OpenStack, btw: your loads on any
cloud, interoperability, etc.

But then again, the decision of which tool to use to manage the local
groups needs to be left in the hands of the group itself. If you're
comfortable with meetup, linkedin, google groups, your own hosted
phpBB, whatever, use it.

All we need is a place to surface all of these activities that happen
around the world and that involve OpenStack.

That said, some other items beyond meetup that could also help:
   * sharing curating capabilities - video, photos and slidedecks.
You've got your YouTube and G+ Hangouts and slideshare... but curating
past events and organizing info into consumable (and locatable)
 archive

This is interesting: what would be the use case exactly? Something
like: after the event, the coordinator adds to the portal the URL for
pictures, slides, A/V recordings relevant for that event. Where you
thinking something like this or more sophisticated?

Lastly, about SSO and user identities. I see UG as having a dual role
 - preach to the choir and getting new converts - or have a forum
for existing Openstack community members (developers, deployers and
users) to interact in person, but also promote openstack to the
uninitiated. An SSO system that will add a potential barrier for folks
who are (not that I understand why in this day and age) reluctant to
sign up providing any personal details (e.g. email address).

I agree. I don't like forcing to create yet another login/password
combo. I tend to believe that we should only require authentication for
the managers/coordinators of the groups to get started. We may need to
build something more sophisticated later on but we'll talk about it
when that time comes.

Fully agreed. Academic and Research sites have extensive X.509

Are you only looking at user certificates or are host certificates in the
scope too ?

Well, the PKI pieces are the same regardless of the CA and certificate
issuing pieces. All we will need to do is to use a signing key to sign a
document. So EJBCA or Dogtag will work equally as well. If people already
have a CA infrastructure, they should be able to leverage that, too.

I rather suspect there's a lot of interest in this topic, so I wanted to

 Hello,

I have installed essex released version of openstack. When I install horizon,
as part of installation it installs everything in pip-requires. This
file clones glance, nova and keystone clients from the git site which is dev
version and overrides my earlier base essex versions.
If git cloning is commented out, then, dashboard cannot be accessed from
browser. It says improperly configured no module novaclient.

Is there a way to properly configure dashboard with the current existing
clients without having to clone it from the git site?

The issue is the Compute is not updating its heartbeat (services table in the

You probably need to check database connection string in the nova.conf on the

1. Network with uuid 5f227bba-eb3b-4dba-ad4c-b47c80aaffd7 is not a
Quantum network (or may be its a quantum network but it doesn't belong
to any tenant) . This network got created automatically when I ran
stack.sh script and is associated with the fixed_range=10.0.0.0/24 in
the nova.conf file. So problem here is that I wanted to launch this
instance on a quantum network managed by a tenant/use (that I created
before launching instance), how can I fix this?
Did you update the stackrc file to include quantum? When you run
stack.sh it should reset the relevant databases.

2. Before running stack.sh, I could see gw-** port in my br-int
bridge. Now it doesn't show up anywhere. Can you tell me what is the
purpose of this port and how can I get it back in my br-int ?

3. Would answer to 1 and 2 help in succesful launch of instances ? If
not, what else do I need to do ?

Thanks,
Salman

Yes I have two regions: Brussels and Liege.

I have configured both regions in the Horizon configuration file:

Just for information: I just have updated my document to version 1.03

[Openstack] SAN and Fibrechannel with OpenStack

2012-05-16 Thread Wolfgang Hennerbichler

dear openstack godfathers;

I do plan to migrate from crappy vmware and some ibm based cloud stack
to openstack and kvm. here's the thing: I am lucky enough to have decent
hardware, all the compute nodes are interconnected via fibre channel.
so I don't want and don't need iscsi. do you think I can make it with
something like clvm? I read through the docs of openstack, but I am not
really sure now if I can make clvm fly without hacking around in
openstack (and nova-volume) too much, especially when it comes to live
migration and so on...

I realize OpenStack was not built for SAN and FC, but I would really
like to hear your opinions on that.

Thanks,

Wolfgang

- Is the nova-compute service running ? If not the nova-compute.log
should show why its failing

- If it is running then it probably means that its getting stuck on
some long running issue (e.g as down loading an image, problems talking to
libvirt, slow response from the DB, etc). XXX in this case means that its
slow in updating its services entry rather than failed as such

Shouldn't nova-network and nova-scheduler also fail then, since they share the
same config file? If so, that's not what's happening with me, only the compute
service is listed as XXX.

From my experience, when I'm having XXX instead of :-), it's a
synchronization problem between nova-compute and the controller.

Check if the NTP service is running in the controller, and the
nova-compute is using this NTP service.

Re: [Openstack] [Compute] nova-compute does not show up as :-) in nova-manage service list

2012-05-16 Thread Leander Bessa Beernaert
I tried 'virsh list', and the command hangs. At first i thought it was
because of KVM, since the vm does not support it. I remember having the
same problem with diablo, but it would only result in error when the
instance was being launched on the compute service. So i changed
libvirt_type=kvm to libvirt_type=qemu.

However, the problem still remains: virsh list still hangs and compute
refuses to leave the state XXX.

Have a look at bug 952176 (Cannot associate a second network/vlan to a

Two solutions: you update the DB manually or you patch /usr/bin/nova-manage.

Hi
 Leander,

The
issue is the Compute is not updating its heartbeat (services table in
the nova database), which is causing this.
You
probably need to check database connection string in the nova.conf on
the Compute host and the db connection from the Compute host is
working.

Thanks
  Regards,
Unmesh

Re: [Openstack] Fwd: [Compute] nova-compute does not show up as :-) in nova-manage service list

2012-05-16 Thread Kiall Mac Innes
Almost all of the libvirt issues I ran into were fixed by restarting
libvirt, and on one occasion, rebooting the server.

I narrowed some of the issues down to various libvirt bugs at the time, but
never followed up after an Ubuntu update fixed the issues..

All that said, I tried 'virsh list', and the command hangs. sounds very
familiar - as does your log output ;)

Have you attempted to restart libvirt yet? (`service libvirt-bin restart`)

Thanks,
Kiall

I've seen *many* cases where nova stalls due to some libvirt issues. I

It can also be a sincronization problem.

I believe this is a single server (well .. VM) setup. NTP /

I tried 'virsh list', and the command hangs. At first i thought it was because
of KVM, since the vm does not support it. I remember having the same problem
with diablo, but it would only result in error when the instance was being
launched on the compute service. So i changed libvirt_type=kvm to
libvirt_type=qemu.

However, the problem still remains: virsh list still hangs and compute
refuses to leave the state XXX.

libvirt, slow response from the DB, etc). XXX in this case means that its
slow in updating its services entry rather than failed as such

Does that really work? Does that work everywhere or just for nova-manage?

I've seen *many* cases where nova stalls due to some libvirt
issues. I wouldn't be so quick to rule libvirt out just because the
 nova-compute process is alive!

It can also be a sincronization problem.
 Did you properly configured ntp??

I believe this is a single server (well .. VM) setup. NTP /
time synchronization should not be an issue.

Re: [Openstack] [Dashboard] Can't access images/snapshots

2012-05-16 Thread Gabriel Hurley
It appears that nova volume is returning an error across the API which
(somehow) is causing a retry across the API, ultimately resulting in the
uncaught exception. That said, I'm stumped on what error would cause that
offhand. I'd check your nova log (and also make sure you actually have the nova
volume service running).

If you can't resolve it, please offer up some more log messages so we can
continue debugging.

All the best!

2012-05-16 Thread Vishvananda Ishaya
Yes it is possible to do everything over one interface, but it is probably
better to separate traffic out over multiple vlans if you can. You could have
rabbit and mysql on one vlan (call it the management vlan), and the public
internet traffic/api on a separate vlan. Finally you could put all of the vms
on their own vlan (or if you are using vlan mode as you say, then each project
will get its own vlan).

Re: [Openstack] [Dashboard] Can't access images/snapshots

2012-05-16 Thread Cheng, Lin Hua (Cloud Services)
The error means Horizon cannot parse the response it got from Nova endpoint. It
is either the response returns an incorrect format or there is some error
during the call to Nova endpoint.

It should look something like:
{
snapshots: [
{
id: 3fbbcccf-d058-4502-8844-6feeffdf4cb5,
display_name: snap-001,
display_description: Daily backup,

status: available,
size: 30,
created_at: 2012-02-29T03:50:07Z
}
]
}

Try turning on the console debug in the local_settings.py to see what is the
response it got.

Hope this helps.

Another question :). To have multiple compute nodes (say 5), I can

have multiple tenants or I need to stick with VLAN to have multiple

Re: [Openstack] SAN and Fibrechannel with OpenStack

2012-05-16 Thread Narayan Desai
I'm not sure that it would be particularly easy to make nova-volume
support clustered filesystems; the current model only supports
attaching a volume to a single instance at a time. Aside from that, it
shouldn't be too hard to use fc as the data path instead of iscsi.
We're looking at using iSER in a similar capacity.
