Re: [Openstack] slow terminate jobs..

2013-05-06 Thread Viktor Viking
Hi Steve,

the updated rabbitmq did default to an ipv6 address which I had to fix
 in the rabbit-env file.

Could you tell me how you did that? I tried option
NODE_IP_ADDRESS=0.0.0.0 in rabbitmq-env but it insists on binding to IPv6
address.

netstat -na | grep 5672

tcp00:::5672:::*LISTEN

Thank you
Viktor

I launched a few instances the messages when up and is holding steady.
Still taking forever to launch more then 1 image.

the updated rabbitmq did default to an ipv6 address which I had to fix
in the rabbit-env file. might have missed something else that needs
tweaked between the older default version and this one.

perhaps unrelated note that the updated openstack/rabbit seems
to have broken my ability to create cinder volumes. the server
nodes show up as down to the controller. Will work on that next.

so in addition to my problem of really long startup times, the process
 of trying to
terminate a number of instances is taking ages as well. currently into
 an 18
instance terminate and its been 45 minutes. As there probably isnt much
 data
movement involved with terminating a job Im wondering if there is a
keystone/nova/mysql/apache/something deadlock going on. normal CLI
 commands are
taking a fairly long time to complete. 10 seconds for a nova
 service-list (only 16
compute nodes) 8 seconds for a userland nova list (20 instances
 running) 7 seconds
  for a keystone tenant-list

not really sure there is a question in all this aside from something
 like has
  anyone else seen such slowness?

bug reporting places. but as of yet nobody that has solved the problem.
I have cleaned up everything and will try 1 more attempts at building all
the quantum network related paths. should that still do the same thing
I will probably go try vlan instead of gre as nobody has complained when
using vlan.

Re: [Openstack] I release naming (calling APAC community)

I would give my vote to Island, which is pretty universal and at the
same time referring to what HK is : an island.

Hi everyone,

As you may know, we name our release cycles after cities or counties in
the state/country where the corresponding design summit is held.

That creates an interesting problem for the I release, since there is
no word starting with i in classic transliteration of Chinese words...
so not so many candidates. We'll have to get a bit creative and be
willing to bend the rules a little.

Feel free to suggest names on this thread, or on the wiki page at:
https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Release_Naming

I am especially interested by the input of our APAC community in general
and our Chinese members in particular, which are probably the best to
let us know which transliteration crime could be acceptable or which
name they would particularly like.

Cheers,

[Openstack] keepalive can not check the haproxy is down.

2013-05-06 Thread Lei Zhang
Hi Guys,

I am trying to use keepalive and haproxy to work together to improve the HA
of the openstack. But I meet following
unexpected issue.

I expect that when the haproxy process is crashed on the MASTER
node(checked by chk_haproxy), the second node
will take over the VIP. But when I stop the haproxy process, nothing is
happened.
However, when stop the keepalived service, the VIP is set up on the node2
as expected.

So I think the root cause should be the chk_haproxy block. But I have no
idea why it doesn't work. Does any body have
ideas?

I just discovered these different sites thanks to this mail thread.

I guess different people are looking for different types of info, judging
by these exchanges.

Whatever you decide as to where the list is hosted, I just wanted to say
that I appreciated the simple *but* informative format
of the related projects page

dashboard like interfaces.

Re: [Openstack] Grizzly multi-node setup

2013-05-06 Thread Viktor Viking
Hi all,

After hunting ghosts this weekend, I finally found the problem.

- Both my host and controller had firewalls set up blocking AMQP messages
- RabbitMQ binds to **all** network interfaces through :::5672. Previously
I believed this to be only v6 addresses. I realize now that if the
flag IPV6_V6ONLY is not set, the IPv6 socket will serve both IPv4 and IPv6
traffic. It can be misleading when reading the output of netstat but that
is not an OpenStack problem

Thank you,
Viktor

Thanks for all the suggestions ! We probably have enough place names so
that we don't need to extend the naming rules to things that are not
place names.

So far, the only suggestion that fits in our strict naming rules is
Ili (a city or county in the country/state where the design summit is
held, single word of 10 characters or less). To have more than one
option, we'll probably extend the rules to include other places (like
street names) in Hong Kong itself.

We'll go through name checks and set up a vote soon, I'll keep you posted.

Hi Guys,

I am trying to use keepalive and haproxy to work together to improve the HA of
the openstack. But I meet following
unexpected issue.

I expect that when the haproxy process is crashed on the MASTER node(checked by
chk_haproxy), the second node
will take over the VIP. But when I stop the haproxy process, nothing is
happened.
However, when stop the keepalived service, the VIP is set up on the node2 as
expected.

So I think the root cause should be the chk_haproxy block. But I have no idea
why it doesn't work. Does any body have
ideas?

[Openstack] Wiki Location for Community Events?

2013-05-06 Thread Henning Sprang
Hi,

As long time organizers of noncommercial virtualization-related community
hacking workshops in Germany,
and being interested in OpenStack since a while, we're planning to create a
meeting dedicated to OpenStack.

As we're not a formal organization, there doesn't exists a a website yet,
and I wanted to ask if i'm allowed to create a page in the wiki to publish
information about the workshop or if it's better to create an external site
somewhere.
What would be a good place to put it into the wiki, if I put it there?
Apart from information about the OpenStack design summit I didn't find
anything similar to this yet.

Thanks in advance,
Henning

 I don't see a 2013.1~g2.tar.gz tarball listed under
http://tarballs.openstack.org/ceilometer/. Where did you get the source
 you are working with?

You may have a bad snapshot, since it is trying to combine
 ceilometer/openstack/common/cfg.py with oslo.config.

I have followed the document. The only thing that is different from the

It seems like Collector, Computer Agent and Central Agent are working. I
only can't get the Api Server working.

Re: [Openstack] Ceilometer Install

2013-05-06 Thread Doug Hellmann
It looks like you still have incompatible versions of things installed.

The configuration library changed during grizzly. The old version and new
version cannot be used together in the same program because they both try
to modify different copies of a global variable. The exception you're
getting is, I think, due to the fact that the API service loads the
keystone middleware to handle authentication. You have a version of the
middleware that uses oslo.config, and a version of ceilometer that uses the
older oslo-incubator version of the configuration library.

The ceilometer team is small, so we have limited capacity to support old
versions (especially pre-incubated versions). We do intend to support
grizzly, but can only offer moderate help with folsom. The g2 release
tarballs *should* be compatible at the communication layer with folsom
versions of the other components, but it looks like you can't install them
into the same Python installation as the other services.

You can separate ceilometer code from the other services a couple of
different ways. The simplest would be to use a separate VM to run
ceilometer. That would let you follow all of the normal instructions, and
ensure that you don't have mismatched versions of libraries. The other way
is to install ceilometer into a virtualenv. That would take more care,
since you need to ensure that the virtualenv does not look at the globally
installed site-packages. I haven't tried doing this, so I can't provide
more detailed steps, and you will likely need to experiment a bit to get it
right.

The one piece of ceilometer that does *need* to be installed in the same
location as the other services is the plugin for the nova compute agent. We
spent a fair amount of time making sure there was a version of that plugin
compatible with folsom, so we believe it should work. However, if you are
just testing ceilometer, or not using it for billing instance-hours, you
could skip deploying that piece entirely.

I guess we won't use meetup.com http://meetup.com as primary location,

I understand that. Feel free to setup a page on the wiki and add it to

Yes, if you'd like to try out OVS with the upstream Linux kernel VXLAN ports,
look at this blueprint here:

https://blueprints.launchpad.net/quantum/+spec/openvswitch-kernel-vxlan

It lists the following to Gerrit reviews, which you can pull and apply to try

[Openstack] Quantum conceptual question (bridges)

2013-05-06 Thread Lorin Hochstein
I'm trying to wrap my head around how Quantum works. If understanding
things correctly, when using the openvswitch plugin, a packet traveling
from a guest out to the physical switch has to cross two software bridges:

1. br-int
2. br-ethN or br-tun (depending on whether using VLANs or GRE tunnels)

So, I think I understand the motivation behind this: the integration bridge
handles the rules associated with the virtual networks defined by OpenStack
users, and the (br-ethN | br-tun) bridge handles the rules associated with
moving the packets across the physical network.

My question is: Does having two software bridges in the path incur a
larger network performance penalty than if there was only a single software
bridge between the VIF and the physical network interface?

If so, was Quantum implemented this way because it's simply not possible to
achieve the desired functionality using a single openvswitch bridge, or was
it because using the dual-bridge approach simplified the implementation, or
was there some other reason?

Re: [Openstack] keepalive can not check the haproxy is down.

2013-05-06 Thread Lei Zhang
Thanks Eric,
I have solve it after breaking down the group.

1. the different netmask is typo. And it doesn't break the failover.
2. Why the group is unnecessary? When there are the two instances using the
same check script , like this case, what's mean after grouping them?

 Hi Guys,

I am trying to use keepalive and haproxy to work together to improve the
HA of the openstack. But I meet following
 unexpected issue.

I expect that when the haproxy process is crashed on the MASTER
node(checked by chk_haproxy), the second node
will take over the VIP. But when I stop the haproxy process, nothing is
 happened.
However, when stop the keepalived service, the VIP is set up on the node2
 as expected.

So I think the root cause should be the chk_haproxy block. But I have no
idea why it doesn't work. Does any body have
 ideas?

Hi all,
I installed openstack following by this guide:
https://github.com/mseknibilel/OpenStack-Folsom-Install-guide/blob/master/OpenStack_Folsom_Install_Guide_WebVersion.rst
during the installation, everything works fine, and I can launch vm, but I
can't ping vm or ssh it, neither vm can ping the outside world.
is there anyone know the solution? thank you very much!

[Openstack] no packets captured at br-int or br-tun

2013-05-06 Thread Liu Wenmao
hi all:

I set up quantum without namespace support, now VMs can ping
gateway(100.0.0.1) but I can not capture any packet at gateway interface,
br-int or br-tun:

root@controller:/var/log/openvswitch# tcpdump -i qr-c5496165-c7 -nn
tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode
listening on qr-c5496165-c7, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size
65535 bytes
^C
0 packets captured
0 packets received by filter
0 packets dropped by kernel

root@controller:/var/log/openvswitch# tcpdump -i br-int -nn
tcpdump: WARNING: br-int: no IPv4 address assigned
tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode
listening on br-int, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 65535 bytes

root@controller:/var/log/openvswitch# tcpdump -i br-tun -nn

listening on br-tun, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 65535 bytes
^C
0 packets captured
0 packets received by filter
0 packets dropped by kernel

When I ping the DHCP server, packets are captured at DHCP server interface,
but not at br-int or br-tun:

root@controller:/var/log/openvswitch# tcpdump -i tap160480aa-84 -nn
tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode
listening on tap160480aa-84, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size

09:41:58.922885 IP 100.0.0.3 100.0.0.4: ICMP echo reply, id 62726, seq
26, length 64

It is strange, 1) why packet is captured at DHCP server interface, not at
gateway interface, 2) why packet is not captured at br-int or br-tun(GRE
packets are captured at eth2)?

[Openstack] Installing OpenvSwitch on CentOS 6.4

2013-05-06 Thread Ashutosh Narayan
Hi Folks,

I have installed Grizzly on CentOS 6.4 and facing some issues while
installing OpenvSwitch in order to make Quantum service work properly.
Can anybody point me to some link which has useful information for the same
?
I was following this link to set up Quantum -
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packstack_to_Quantum

And the below mentioned link to install OpenvSwitch -
http://networkstatic.net/open-vswitch-red-hat-installation/
I am not able to compile the source. It fails while running make.

Thank you,

I was following this link to set up Quantum -
 https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packstack_to_Quantum

And the below mentioned link to install OpenvSwitch -
 http://networkstatic.net/open-vswitch-red-hat-installation/
I am not able to compile the source. It fails while running make.

As http://networkstatic.net/open-vswitch-red-hat-installation/ mentioned,
did you comment out the skb_frag_page() of skbuff.h file?

I faced similar problem on RHEL6.3 and I could do it by the following:

Hi Ken,

Yes, I have commented that code in the line 242.
Let me see if following the second link that you
sent helps.

Thank you,
