Andy,

Thanks for this work. OCCI is an interesting and open option as the world
moves towards federated clouds. I hope that this will continue the momentum
towards an open API which can address multiple backend IaaS solutions
transparently.

Dear Andy, all,

There is little left to say for me (thanks to others) but a wholeheartedly
Bravo! on the effort.

As Matteo and others have stated, it is important to have a publicly defined
standard being implemented in production grade software. But much more
important, certainly from an EGI perspective, is the availability of *choice*
of implementation for anyone who wishes to operate a Cloud platform.

For us at EGI it is of particular importance as we are working towards a
production level federation of IaaS Cloud offerings, as a federation cannot
prescribe which particular software implementation to operate. With the
availability of OCCI in OpenStack, we now are in the place to actually see our
endorsement for OCCI to happen in in reality rather on paper.

What's more, native support for OCCI particularly makes the choice for
OpenStack attractive, as this means not only less operative service management
effort for a fronting proxy service (I hope!), but also, lets say, less
opportunity for configuration and operation mistakes. :-)

Cheers, and thanks again,
Michel

This is indeed very useful and timely.

We here at ZHAW,
http://www.zhaw.ch/en/zurich-university-of-applied-sciences.html, are
deploying a large OpenStack installation and a cross infrastructure
management framework interoperability is important for us as both a
business and research concern.

As we're a institute connected to the Swiss federation, the very reasons
noted by the UK and German Ministry reports resonate with us.

The Swiss government is finalizing an Cloud Computing action / adoption
plan and open standards / open source is central to this strategy.

We thus welcome all such supporting developments. Needless to say will
be deploying this.

Hello Andy,

Thanks for the good news.

We are using OCCI to manage multiple clouds through a unique
interface.
Having OpenNebula OCCI Server already implemented [1]  and EC2 on its

Breaking cloud providers lock-in seems no longer a distant dream :)

Great job. We will add it to the list of

Plus it makes OpenStack a pure open cloud player (i.e. open cloud = open

Re: [Openstack] Open Cloud Computing Interface Blueprint Implementation

2012-04-15 Thread Sill, Alan
Andy,

Fantastic! It's great to hear about this work and opportunities for more folks
to get involved.

As the developing organization for the OCCI specifications, we are delighted to
see this kind of uptake. OCCI as you know is about to celebrate its third
birthday as a full-scale working group, and just passed a year since ifirst
formal publication. OCCI is already part of many items of commercial and
open-source running software in the field and has proven its ease of
implementation. We at the OGF are very pleased to have hosted the working group
that has put out such a useful set of community-developed specs.

As the field of open cloud standards matures, I hope that the pioneering and
already useful work done by the OCCI group is recognized, and the ease of use
and multiple programming language interfaces and tools and related binding work
that has been done will become familiar to the coding community.

The specifications themselves can be found at

http://ogf.org/documents/GFD.183.pdf ,
 http://ogf.org/documents/GFD.184.pdf and
http://ogf.org/documents/GFD.185.pdf

for the OCCI Core, Infrastructure and RESTful HTTP Rendering documents,
respectively. As you know, the JSON Rendering specification work is already at
a highly advanced and usable state.

In addition to the extremely nice implementation work you refer to below, we
have seen development of rOCCI for Ruby, OCCI4Java, libvirt4occi, pyssf and
occi-py as well as the very powerful ANTLR grammar that you mention in the
implementation links you provided. In addition, there are automated tools for
compatibility testing and many working production coded examples that can be
used as templates. These make it possible for working developers to get a quick
start based on actual code for their favorite environment.

OCCI already forms the basis of the infrastructure interfaces for the EGI
Federated Clouds Task Force and is built into OpenNebula, and recently work has
been done to provide an EC2 interface implementation, raising the prospect now
that OCCI can provide the first true cross-project, cross-platform and
cross-infrastructure interface for cloud computing.

I hope you have a great turnout at the OpenStack unconference session. Rest
assured that OGF will continue to provide a great home for the open working
groups that have provided these and related specs. We look forward to continued
progress on your OpenStack implementation. Please keep us informed as your
implementation progresses.

2012-04-15 Thread Craig Lee

Andy,

It's wonderful to see this work coming to fruition! In my day job, I
come in contact with any number of organizations across the USG that are
all demanding open cloud standards to avoid vendor lock-in and promote
portability and interoperability. We have to do everything we can to
promote open standards such as OCCI. OCCI, along with OVF and CDMI,
were mentioned several times by name in the NIST Federation Cloud
Technology Roadmap. We are working to get several projects started as
part of the NIST Priority Action Plans to demonstrate usage in concrete
scenarios. There is tremendous interest in the USG wrt OpenStack for
these reasons, along with the need for truly open APIs.

I regret that I cannot be at the OCCI unconference -- I will be in DC at
that time discussing some of these very issues. Let's tag-up afterwards.

Re: [Openstack] Open Cloud Computing Interface Blueprint Implementation

2012-04-15 Thread Andre Merzky
Hey Andy,

thanks for keeping the ball rolling! Please keep me posted about
progress with the OpenStack/FutureGrid/OCCI integration - we are on
standby to run experiments whenever that integration is done...

Best, Andre.

 Hi all,

Further, there are an unconference session facilities [13] will be held at
next week's design summit where further discussion can happen. It would be
super if those interested or sceptical could attend this, especially from the
 aspect of learning more.

 Cheers,
 Andy

Re: [Openstack] : Open Cloud Computing Interface Blueprint Implementation

2012-04-15 Thread Behrens

+1...That sounds great. We have an Android client that works with OCCI. So
we'll definitely be testing it against the OpenStack implementation.
I saw some chatter about an OCCI unconference.we'll work to get a get a
presentation setup for that.
