Re: [Openstack-operators] Scaling the Ops Meetup

2015-06-30 Thread Shilla Saebi
Tom,

First off, thank you for organizing this event. It has proven to be a
success and the growth shows how much interest there is in the community. A
couple of ideas came to mind when I read your e-mail.

What about breaking the event up into regions? Or having additional
sponsors that are users instead of vendors? Just like we have had corporate
sponsors in the past that have been operators, can we find more of those to
split the costs?

Another thought that comes to mind is having ticket sales for the event
with a cap? A concern I have is that if you grow the ops mid cycle summit
too much, the access may get diluted and many of the benefits can get lost.

On Tue, Jun 30, 2015 at 12:33 AM, Tom Fifield t...@openstack.org wrote:

 Hi all,

Right now, behind-the-scenes, we're working on getting a venue for next
ops mid-cycle. It's taking a little longer than normal, but rest assured
 it is happening.

Why is it so difficult? As you may have noticed, we're reaching the size
of event where both physically and financially, only the largest
 organisations can host us.

We thought we might get away with organising this one old-school with a
single host and sponsor. Then, for the next, start a brainstorming
discussion with you about how we scale these events into the future -
since once we get up and beyond a few hundred people, we're looking at
having to hire a venue as well as make some changes to the format of the
 event.

However, it seems that even this might be too late. We already had a
company that proposed to host the meetup at a west coast US hotel
instead of their place, and wanted to scope out other companies to
 sponsor food.

This would be a change in the model, so let's commence the discussion of
how we want to scale this event :)

So far I've heard things like:
 * my $CORPORATE_BENEFACTOR would be fine to share sponsorship with others
 * I really don't want to get to the point where we want booths at the
 ops meetup

Which are promising! It seems like we have a shared understanding of
what to take this forward with.

So, as the ops meetup grows - what would it look like for you?

How do you think we can manage the venue selection and financial side of
things? What about the session layout and the scheduling with the
 growing numbers of attendees?

Current data can be found at
 https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Operations/Meetups#Venue_Selection .

I would also be interested in your thoughts about how these events have
only been in a limited geographical area so far, and how we can address
 that issue.

 Regards,

 Tom

[Openstack-operators] OpenStack Architecture Design Guide Virtual Swarm

2015-12-17 Thread Shilla Saebi
All,

We are set and ready to go for the architecture design guide virtual swarm
on 12/21 and 12/22. This will be our first combined effort to rework the
guide, starting with the virtual two day swarm. At this time, we are still
looking for SMEs to review the current guide, the proposed structure and
suggest changes to the information architecture and content. Sign up to
volunteer at the following link:

https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/arch-guide-reorg

The virtual swarm is scheduled for the 21st and 22nd of December and it's
flexible for everyone to work in their own time zone. We have designated a
freenode IRC channel for the swarm: #arch-guide-swarm

Feel free to join and sign up, look forward to seeing you there!

[Openstack-operators] User Committee Elections February 2017

2017-01-26 Thread Shilla Saebi
Hello Everyone,

You may have already heard the exciting news that the OpenStack Board of
Directors recently approved the User Committee (UC) bylaws and charter
. These
remarkable changes will bring the first elected UC representatives in 2017
and expand the UC to 5 members! Voting for the 2017 UC members will be granted
to the Active User Contributors (AUC).

The
current UC will continue to serve until the elections and continue with a
6-month seat. This initial election will run to determine the other two
members. Candidates ranking 1st and 2nd place will get one-year seats. In
the fall of 2017, elections will see the normal renewal of 3 seats for a
one-year period.

Open candidacy for the UC positions will be from January 30 - February 10,
05:59 UTC. Voting for the 2017 User Committee (UC) members will be
open on February
13th and will remain open until February 17, 11:59 UTC. Additional details
and the process for nomination can be found here
.

As a reminder, please see the community code of conduct (
http://www.openstack.org/legal/community-code-of-conduct/)

Please let me, or anyone from the UC know if you have any questions,
comments or concerns.

Thank you,

OpenStack User Committee

2017-07-05 Thread Shilla Saebi
Hello Everyone,

The OpenStack User Committee will be holding an election in August, per the
(UC) bylaws and charter
. The current
UC will serve until the elections in August. At that point, the current two
UC members who still have 6 months to serve get a 6-month seat, and an
election is run to determine the other three members. Candidates ranking 1st,
2nd, and 3rd will get a one-year seat. Voting for the 2017 UC members will
be granted to the Active User Contributors (AUC).

Open candidacy for the UC positions will be from July 31 - August 11, 05:59
UTC. Voting for the User Committee (UC) members will be open on August 14th and
will remain open until August 18, 11:59 UTC. Additional details and the
process for nomination can be found here
.

As a reminder, please see the community code of conduct (
http://www.openstack.org/legal/community-code-of-conduct/)

Please let me, or anyone from the UC know if you have any questions,
comments or concerns.

Thank you,

 Count me in.

Tom, you go above and beyond so often, have been a role model for myself,
and many others in the community, and such a pleasure to work with. A
proper send off is in order.
