As I've said a couple of times in the past, I think the
architecturally sound approach is to keep this inside Nova.

The two main reasons are:
 * Having multiple frontend API's keeps us honest in terms of
separation between the different layers in Nova.
 * Having the EC2 API inside Nova ensures the internal data model is
rich enough to "feed" the EC2 API. If some field's only use is to
enable the EC2 API and the EC2 API is a separate component, it's not
hard to imagine it being deprecated as well.

I fear that deprecation is a one way street and I would like to ask
one more chance to resucitate it in its current home.

I could be open to a discussion about putting it into a separate
repository, but having it functionally remain in its current place, if
that's somehow easier to swallow.

Admittedly, I'm not 100% up-to-date on Riak, but last I looked, there
wasn't any "consistent mode". However, when writing a value, you can
specify that you want all (or a quorum of) replicas to be written to
disk before you get a succesful response. However, this does not imply
transactional support. In other words, if one of the writes fail, it
doesn't get rolled back on the other nodes. You just don't get a
succesful response.

I agree. I never meant to imply that we should run anything in "strong
consistency mode". There might be a few operations that require strong
consistency, but they should be exceptional. Quotas sound like a good
example.

I agree about the requirement for quorum having those effects (also for
e.g. Galera).  I think you are missing my point, though. My concerns are
not whether MySQL can handle the data volume of a large scale OpenStack
deployment.  I'm sure it can. Without even breaking a sweat. MySQL has
been used in countless deployments to handle data sets vastly bigger
than what we're dealing with.

My concern is reliability.

This problem exists today.  Suppose you have a 5 node Galera cluster.
Would you refuse reads on the wrong side of the partition to avoid
providing stale data?

With e.g. Riak it's perfectly possible to accept both reads and writes
on both sides of the partition.

No matter what we do, we need accept the fact that when we handle the
data, it is by definition out of date. It can have changed the
millisecond after we read it from there and started using it.

It kinda is, and it kinda isn't. I never meant to suggest that just
replacing the datastore would solve everything. We need to carefully
look at our use of the data from the datastore and consider the impact
of eventual consistency on this use. On the other hand, as I just
mentioned above, this is a problem that exists right now, today. We're
just ignoring it, because we happen to have a consistent datastore.

Looking at that particular example, it's about deleting an instance and
all its associated metadata. As we established earlier, these are things
that would just be in the same key as the instance itself, so it'd just
be a single key that would get deleted. Easy.

That said, there will certainly be situations where there'll be a need
for some sort of anti-entropy mechanism. It just so happens that those
situations already exist. We're dealing with about a complex distributed
system.  We're kidding ourselves if we think that any kind of
consistency is guaranteed, just because our data store favours
consistency over availability.

Sure, quotas will require stronger consistency. Any NoSQL data store
worth its salt gives you primitives to implement that.

You say it would be nice if people did something other than offer snarky

I may very well be wrong(!), but this statement makes it sound like you've
never used e.g. Riak. Or, if you have, not done so in the way it's
supposed to be used.

If you embrace an alternative way of storing your data, you wouldn't just
blindly create a container for each table in your RDBMS.

For example: In Nova's SQL-based datastore we have a table for security
groups and another for security group rules. Rows in the security group
rules table have a foreign key referencing the security group to which
they belong. In a datastore like Riak, you could have a security group
container where each value contains not just the security group
information, but also all the security group rules. No joins in
Python-land necessary.

I was really hoping you could be more specific than "best"/"most
appropriate" so that we could have a focused discussion.

I don't think relying on a central data store is in any conceivable way
appropriate for a project like OpenStack. Least of all Nova.

I don't see how we can build a highly available, distributed service on
top of a centralized data store like MySQL.

Tens or hundreds of thousands of nodes, spread across many, many racks
and datacentre halls are going to experience connectivity problems[1].

This means that some percentage of your infrastructure (possibly many
thousands of nodes, affecting many, many thousands of customers) will
find certain functionality not working on account of your datastore not
being reachable from the part of the control plane they're attempting to
use (or possibly only being able to read from it).

I say over and over again that people should own their own uptime.
Expect things to fail all the time. Do whatever you need to do to ensure
your service keeps working even when something goes wrong. Of course
this applies to our customers too. Even if we take the greatest care to
avoid downtime, customers should spread their workloads across multiple
availability zones and/or regions and probably even multiple cloud
providers. Their service towards their users is their responsibility.

However, our service towards our users is our responsibility. We should
take the greatest care to avoid having internal problems affect our
users.  Building a massively distributed system like Nova on top of a
centralized data store is practically a guarantee of the opposite.

Had devstack had support for Ceph, someone could have much more easily
been running these tests in an automated, continuous fashion and have
raised these issues at a more appropriate time.

Fair enough. That seems like something we should fix, though. It really
seems to me like adding this intermediate service is an overly
complicated (although necessary given the current constraints) approach.

User registration seems like something that very much falls under
Keystone's domain:

 * Keystone should abstract any and all interaction with the user
   database. Having another service that adds things directly to MySQL
   or LDAP seems wrong to me.

 * Having a component whose only job is to talk to Keystone really
   screams to me that it ought to be part of Keystone.

Perhaps a user registration API extension that lets you pass just
username/password/whatever and then it creates the relevant things on
the backend in a way that's configured in Keystone. I.e. it validates
the request and then creates the user and tenant and grants the
appropriate roles.

As I see it, if we don't trust Keystone's security, we're *so* screwed
anyway. This needs to work.

I've just taken a look at the feedback in the whiteboard. If it's ok,
I'd like to take this discussion back to the mailing list. I find the
whiteboards somewhat clumsy for discussions.

Akihiro Motoki points out that all services should work without the
dashboard. Keystone already exposes an API to create new users, so
that requirement is already fulfilled, whether there's an intermediate
service or not, so I don't really understand this objection.

Kieran Spear argues in favour of a separate registration service that
Horizon talks to over some sort of RPC interface. He argues that
putting Keystone admin credentials on public facing webserver is a
security risk.

I agree that putting admin credentials on a public web server is a
security risk, but I'm not sure why a set of restricted admin
credentials that only allow you to create users and tenants is a
bigger problem than the credentials for separate registration service
that performs the exact same operations?

I may have said something along those lines. Just to clarify -- since
you started this post by talking about scheduler scalability -- the main
motivation for using a non-SQL backend isn't scheduler scalability, it's
availability and resilience. I just don't accept the failure modes that
MySQL (and derivatives such as Galera) impose.

It's been talked about on and off since... well, probably since we
started this project.

The session on adding a backend using a non-SQL datastore was pretty
well attended.

Sure. I didn't mean necessarily removing the support for richer
instance configurations, but simply making them simple to disable and
thus enable the O(1) scheduler.

Yes, when moving beyond simple flavours, the idea as initially proposed
falls apart.  I see two ways to fix that:

 * Don't move beyond simple flavours. Seriously. Amazon have been pretty
   darn succesful with just their simple instance types.

 * If you must make things complicated, use fanout to send a reservation
   request:

   - Send out reservation requests to everyone listening (*)

   - Compute nodes able to accommodate the request reserve the resources
in question and respond directly to the requestor. Those unable to
 accommodate the request do nothing.

   - Requestor (scheduler, API server, whatever) picks a winner amongst
the repondants and broadcasts a message announcing the winner of
 the request.

   - The winning node acknowledges acceptance of the task to the
 requestor and gets to work.

   - Every other node that responded also sees the broadcast and cancels
 the reservation.

   - Reservations time out after 5 seconds, so a lost broadcast doesn't
 result in reserved-but-never-used resources.

   - If noone has volunteered to accept the reservation request within a
couple of seconds, broadcast wider.

(*) "Everyone listening" isn't necessarily every node. Maybe you have
topics for nodes that are at less than 10% utilisation, one for less
than 25% utilisation, etc. First broadcast to those at 10% or less, move
on to 20%, etc.

This is just off the top of my head. I'm sure it can be improved upon. A
lot. My point is just that there's plenty of alternatives to the
omniscient schedulers that we've been used to for 3 years now.
