Re: [openstack-dev] [api] api working group proposed actions guideline needs input

2016-01-19 Thread Michael Krotscheck
Is there an accepted process for this? And/or does everyone care enough to
really weigh in?

Some dictionary terms:
Task: A piece of work to be done or undertaken.
Transition: The process or a period of changing from one state or condition
to another.
Action: The fact or process of doing something, typically to achieve an aim.

Personally, I prefer action, because I feel like an action can be composed
of multiple tasks and/or transitions.

2016-01-18 Thread Michael Krotscheck
There's related work going on in ironic -
https://review.openstack.org/#/c/224022/
- it proposes a way by which a
user may query the transitions (actions) of the underlying FSM: "Get me all
the valid actions/transitions". Other comments on the review.

Also: I like using the same word for things. Is there a meaningful enough
difference between "Actions", "Transitions", and "Tasks", that requires
different words?

not that i have detected, although i would love hear other opinions on this.

i have to admit that this is the first time i'm hearing "transitions",
and i feel it could be looked at separately from "actions" or "tasks".
but i think this is largely a semantic debate.

i do think it would be useful to coalesce on a standard term for what we
are talking about.

[openstack-dev] [api] api working group proposed actions guideline needs input

2016-01-15 Thread Chris Dent

In this review:

https://review.openstack.org/#/c/234994/

there's a proposal that provides guidance for how to represent certains
types of actions against resources in an HTTP API. There's been a fair
bit of back and forth between me and the original author without
conclusion.

It would be great to get additional eyes on this spec so that we
could reach agreement. It is quite likely everyone involved is wrong
in some fashion or there are misunderstandings happening. If you're
working to implement actions in APIs, or just thinking about it,
pile on.

There's quite a lot of meat in the comments, discussing various
alternatives.

Thanks.
