2016-09-27 Thread Jeffrey Zhang
Thanks for all guys.

So we have reached an agreement now. We will mark the fedora deprecated now
( Newton ), and plan to drop it in O cycle.

Both, in my experience in maintaining RDO on Fedora, I encountered
similar issues than Kolla. It's doable but a lot of work.
One of the biggest problem are updates, you may have disruptive
updates on python modules packages quite frequently, or even rarer,
get some updates reverted.
So keeping Fedora in a good shape would require a decent amount of efforts.

2016-09-22 Thread Martin André
My vote goes to option 2. It's common knowledge Kolla's Fedora base
image is in bad shape and doesn't get any attention from developers.
It's time to deprecated it.

2016-09-20 Thread Steven Dake (stdake)
Fwiw Swapnil, I think having a solid fedora implementation would be fantastic
to help manage the transition to centos8 whenever that happens. At this point
nobody has stepped up to do the work. We can always revisit any policy or vote
in the future if the environment changes (i.e. you are freed up to work on
making fedora work well). However, no majority has been reached yet, so its
premature to call this vote closed.

I disagree. Oracle Linux is well implemented and very well maintained by Paul

Honestly, only CentOS and Ubuntu are seriously implemented.. I'd go further and
rip out the rest unless there is a strong effort from people committed to

2016-09-19 Thread Steven Dake (stdake)
+1 for option 2, unless some good Fedora folk appear in Kolla to maintain it in
the future. In that case, we can always undo a deprecation within a cycle.

Note the deprecation policy states that we do not remove functionality for 1
cycle after having released it for stable deliverables. Even though fedora is
broken, it would be a violation of the deprecation policies to do so. Notng it
is planned for deprecation in Newton and then doing the work of deprecating it
can be done in Ocata.

+1

Honestly, only CentOS and Ubuntu are seriously implemented.. I'd go further
and rip out the rest unless there is a strong effort from people committed
to getting parity.

[openstack-dev] [vote][kolla] deprecation for fedora distro support

2016-09-19 Thread Jeffrey Zhang
Kolla core reviewer team,

Kolla supports multiple Linux distros now, including

* Ubuntu
* CentOS
* RHEL
* Fedora
* Debian
* OracleLinux

But only Ubuntu, CentOS, and OracleLinux are widely used and we have
robust gate to ensure the quality.

For fedora, Kolla hasn't any test for it and nobody reports any bug
about it( i.e. nobody use fedora as base distro image). We (kolla
team) also do not have enough resources to support so many Linux
distros. I prefer to deprecate fedora support now. This is talked in
past but inconclusive[0].

Please vote:

1. Kolla needs support fedora( if so, we need some guys to set up the
gate and fix all the issues ASAP in O cycle)
2. Kolla should deprecate fedora support
