2016-05-25 Thread Emily K Hugenbruch

Amrith,

This is a separate program from outreachy. Typically outreachy is more of
an internship. This program is supposed to be more of a "we meet for an
hour once a week to go over some questions" or "I'm stuck on what to work
on next, can you suggest a few things". Something more lightweight for the
mentors and mentees.

Thanks for noticing the links. One should've pointed to
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxtM4AiszlEyVkEtdktmWjBPN3c/view.  We do
have a wiki page for mentoring where we're listing the different types of
mentoring, so if projects have links for newcomers, you can add them here:
https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Mentors We're debating how to best lay out
the page right now, but eventually we'll move it to a more permanent place
than a wiki.
Thanks!

Hi,
The lightweight mentoring program sponsored by the Women of OpenStack has
really taken off, and we have about 35 mentees looking for technical help
that we don't have mentors for. We're asking for help from the PTLs to
announce the mentoring program in team meetings then direct people to the
guidelines (here<
https://docs.google.com/document/d/10ZJz0oX_V944o84xe-l67zvy2kf1RyCzpudU2fTlDOA

>) and signup form<
https://openstackfoundation.formstack.com/forms/mentoring> if they're
interested.

Mentors should be regular contributors to a project, with an interest in
helping new people and about 4 hours a month for mentoring. They do not
have to be women; the program is just sponsored by WoO, we welcome all
mentees and mentors.

These are the projects/areas where we especially need mentors:

 *   Cinder
 *   Containers
 *   Documentation
 *   Glance
 *   Keystone
 *   Murano
 *   Neutron
 *   Nova
 *   Ops
 *   Searchlight
 *   Telemetry
 *   TripleO
 *   Trove
If you have any questions you can contact me, or ask on openstack-women
where the mentoring committee hangs out.
Thanks!

You're right Augustina. I took your response of "potential contributors to get
involved with a specific project so that mentoring can happen organically" out
of context from just the scope of Nova. Apologies for the confusion.

[amrith] Yes, first impressions are key and my (unfortunate) experience with
mentorship in the recent past has been very unfortunate. I think the website
that auggy has put together is a great first impression and I'd like to make
something like that for Trove.

I'm a little confused by your response. I wasn't making any assumptions or
intending to criticize this mentorship program. I understood that Emily had
highlighted gaps in certain technical areas, of which Nova is one. In
recognition of the challenges faced by new contributors, the Nova team had a
session at the Newton Design Summit where we discussed ideas on how to address
these challenges within our own team. One outcome of this session is that I
volunteered for the role of Mentoring Czar. When I saw Emily's original post, I
thought this information might be relevant. My intention is to share our
resources for new contributors and present myself as a contact point so this
information could be provided to participants in the mentorship program that
don't have mentors assigned. In fact, if other projects do have things in place
for new contributors, it would probably be helpful if they also provided this
information to the mentorship program.

Again, my intention was not to criticize and I think any effort to encourage
new contributors is a good thing. I apologize if my original response suggested
otherwise.

Auggy,

This is a great wiki page and would love to see a high level "OpenStack
Mentoring" page with links to projects that have this kind of "beginners guide".

I'll try and do something similar for Trove but you've set the bar very high.
