Are you sure the router/SNMP MIB support 64bit counters? What happens if
you snmpwalk from the commandline to this router?

I'm running 3.7.2 and have no issues with doing what you describe below.
Then again, I'm not using mrtg or nmis - might that be the difference?

I have found that if you enable snmp for a host:
Main menu -> configuration -> host -> snmp -> enable snmp
Once enabled, we find that we can no longer disable that function.
Anyone got a solution ?

getbulk queries and Opsview was falling back to SNMP ver 1 queries
