Using "_OFFLINE_ROLLBACK_SEGMENTS" or
"_CORRUPTED_ROLLBACK_SEGMENTS" might allow you to open the database, but there
is an almost absolutecertainty that you will hopelessly corrupt
thedata in the database in doing so. So this is not a solution, this
is the absolutevery LAST resort.
I personally prefer to have it set, but I think the
reasoning against setting it has to do with allowing rollback segments to "find
themselves"... :-)
In other words, it is based on the idea that space
allocation (and deallocation) for rollback segment extents is unnecessary and
harmful.

/dev/rmt/0" or something like that if you want to compress your backups of "raw"
devices using the standard UNIX "dd" utility. However, Oracle Support has
always been leery about the use of "compress" for backups, with regards to

If I understood this correctly, you are saying that a DBMS_LOCK.SLEEP(600)
call
would tie up an MTS shared server for 10 minutes causing other sessions
connected to it
to hang for 10 minutes?
