What
OS and version of Oracle are you using? On unix systems, the presumption
is that only authorized personnel (DBAs and Sys Admins)can connect as the
oracle user. Only the oracle user can connect internal. If
unauthorized personnel have the oracle password, change

Ganesh, I actually thought I had done this, but obviously the stress of a downed
system must have clouded my brain. It now works as described
below.
Thanks

Beatriz,
It is possible to change your internal password. At the command prompt (DOS)
issue the command
ORAPWD file=passwordfilepassword=newpasswordentrries=no. of DBAs
e.g.
ORAPWD file=ABCSPWD.ORA password=oracle entries=5 (where you expect up to 5

You probably are running sqlplus on NT. Therefore, try
with sqlnet.authentication_services=(nts) in the
sqlnet.ora and look in the groups of users of NT for
the group ora_SID_NT. The Oracle NT user has to be
member of this one.
If you are running Oracle on Unix, you have to look in
sqlnet.ora
learned that we can change the
internal password by 'ORADIM' utility.
Now now i changed the internal password by using this utility.
After that i tested with default password 'oracle' (???). it's going ... i
surpriced...
even more, if i put any characters instead of password, it's succeeded
A lot of thanks for all of you!!!.

Hi Alex,
Are you sure in Unix you do not need password for internal if you
are member of DBA group ?

You use the orapwd utility to change the remote internal password on unix. The default file name is $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/orapw$ORACLE_SID. Also, when you log in as internal locally, you don't need a password as long as the id you log in with is part of the dba unix group.

If you are on unix - you do not need internal password if you log in as
member of dba group. On NT before 8.1 you need internal password but you can
change it recreating password file or recreating instance using oradim.

There is not internal password, per se. If you are using unix, you need to
be part of the
DBA group to connect internal. I'm not sure how it works on NT.
