Also create links for the *.ora files from /var/opt/oracle to
$ORACLE_HOME/network/admin of each Oracle version, and set TNS_ADMIN
variable to /var/opt/oracle.
For multiple ORACLE_HOME's, write a script that prompts the user to
enter ORACLE_SID, then set ORACLE_HOME from oratab for that ORACLE_S
for unix think env var TNS_ADMIN
for nt think registry entry TNS_ADMIN.

Hamid,
Are you using Unix? If you are, put your sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora in a
generic location so that all homes can access them. For instance, on HP-UX
we put them in /etc and
Actualy I have 8.1.6 & 8.1.7 on sun solaris not NT, the things which
confusing me is the first day after installation I could connect to database

Tom,
I have checked all the tnsname & sqlnet.ora for both side client & server
nothing have been changed after I shutdown the database, I have a question
how come it was working perefect before I shutdown the database, don't know
when you shutdown it's change some thing on tnsname etc.. or not???
Hamid,
I got stung with this just yesterday. Look closely at the TNSNAMES file.
Check this example:
WTWT_DBDOL0A1ADVWTW =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = Dbdol0a1advwtw)(PORT = 1521))
)
(CONNECT_DATA = (SERVICE_NAME = wtwt)(SERVER = DEDICATE
Check the value of service_names:
SQL> show parameter service_names
Then make sure your tnsnames.ora uses SERVICE_NAME (not SID) within
CONNECT_DATA and the value of SERVICE_NAME matches the value returned by
the above query (normally db_name.db_domain)
CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=db_nam
Hamid - I would check your ORACLE_SID, ORACLE_HOME settings. Are you using
TWO-TASK environment variable?

Hi list,
I asked this quest
Brian,
In order for you to connect to the Oracle database on server A from server B you have
to have the server A instance defined in the TNSnames.ora on server B. From the ORA
message it appears that it in not defined and/or you do not have the IP address of
server A in the server B host file
Do you have that database in the tnsnames on the machine you are trying to
access it from? If not, put if into the tnsnames file on that machine.
HTH,
Ruth

Don't forget your domain in tnsnames.ora.
A serv.= or serv.mydomain.com should work.

Try TWO_TASK on Unix, LOCAL on NT or ORA_DFLT_HOSTSTR on the NT predecessor.

So you want to connect without the @string system/password as opposed
to system/password@orcl?
-O
I want to connect using the @service_name

Rick:
In tnsnames.ora, is the entry listed as "satt.world" ?
If so, then check the sqlnet.ora file, to see if there is a line
names.default_domain = world
