HELP

Hi, Well, since I can't sleep, I may as well try solving a problem. This is a bit odd, and I'm trying to think of the most efficient way to do it. I've set up some bitmaps in my app. Consider we have documents that we want to sell. In order to be able to sell a given doc, we need to have it stored in the vault and we also need to have negotiated the proper contract w/ the publisher. So, I've got two bitmaps, STORAGE and PERMISSIONS. But, here's the hook. There are 8 different types of storage, so I have an 8 bit mask. However, for every storage type, there are two types of permission. So, I have a 16 bit permissions mask. What I'd like to do is take my 8-bit STORAGE mask, say it's 10110011 and convert it to 1100. Note that all I did there was take each bit in the input mask, and make the same value repeat. So, 0 would become 00, 1 would become 11, 10 would become 1100. Does that make sense? Once I've done that, I can take my STORAGE mask that's now stretched to 16 bits, and directly AND it with my PERMISSIONS mask. So, my question is: Is there a nice, scalable way to take my 8 bits and expand them into 16 bits, in the way that I'm describing? A clever bit twiddling expression would be perfect, but anything that's efficient and scalable will do. (The end product will be hidden behind a view or stored procedure.) Any thoughts, anyone? We have two servers: Server A running iAS ; Server B running IDS 9 and serving files. We map one drive from server B to server A and we are trying to access the forms on the remote driver: http://host:port/forms90/f90servlet?form=f:\form_name.fmx But we receive an error saying that the servlet could not read the form file. If we copy the file from f:\ to a local drive , ie , c:\temp , the form can be executed succesfully. We are aware of a known bug issue in the old OAS that prevent using forms apps running on remote drivers . but we think that it could (and should) be fixed on iAS. Does anyone facing the same problem or trying to do something similar on IAS ?? Both server are running Win2K. Hi, I have been grappling with this for sometime I have a table a_user_groups USER_ID SECURITY_GROUP_ID GROUP_ID -- - -- 1005 1012 1010 1005 1012 1011 1006 1013 1010 1007 1017 1016 1008 1018 1010 1008 1018 1011 The security_group_id currently is uniquely generated every time a user is added and a group_id is associated with the user_id. For eg: user_id 1005 is associated with groups 1010 and 1011. User 1008 has the same combination but the security_group_id is generated differently. The generation happens from C code and there is an option to correct the problem in the C code but I am trying to see if I can prevent that The requirement is that user_id 1008 and any other users with the same group_id combination should have the same security_group_id 1012, basically the first occurrence for the combination. In the case of user_id 1006 the value for security_group_id is 1013 and the group_id the user_id belongs to is 1016. So all the user_ids with a group_id association of 1016 (1016 in a combination does not count) down the line will have to be updated to 1013. I found a solution for the case where I associate a group to a user_id in this existing table by creating another table that converted the above table into a hierarchy Table b_hier_user_groups USER_ID CGID PARENT_VALUE CHILD_VALUE -- -- --- 1005 1012 1010 1005 1012 10101011 1006 1013 1010 1007 1017 1016 1008 1018 1010 1008 1018 10101011 Then using a PL/SQL script I generated the tree using sys_connect_by_path I determined if the user had a path that already. For eg: in the above case if the user 1006 was being associated with group_id 1011, then I would check the exsiting trees to see if there was a path already as in 1010,1011. In this case it does exist and the cgid (equivalent to security_group_id in the above table) is 1012 and update the user_id 1006 to cgid 1012. But I am not for some reason able to apply this solution to the existing rows. I have a feeling that I am missing something simple The requirement that I am grappling with is to update the values in the existing table. I can get the table b_hier_user_groups created from the a_user_groups. Please let me know if you need more information The table structures are as below a_user_groups Name Null?Type - USER_ID NOT NULL NUMBER SECURITY_GROUP_ID NOT NULL NUMBER GROUP_ID NOT NULL NUMBER Table b_hier_user_groups Name Null?Type - USER_IDNUMBER CGID --- same as security_Group_id from above) NUMBER PARENT_VALUE NUMBER CHILD_VALUENUMBER Thanks for your time and help in advance. Raj, Another consideration is a potential for a buffer busy waits. the larger the block size is, the more the number of rows in an average block. Thsi increases the possibility of a buffer busy wait. HTH. Arup An 8.0.6 ops database being migrated to 9i RAC database on Solaris 8. The 8.0 database had an block size of 2k. Multiblock read count is 8. This is an OLTP database, all transactions almost always work on a single row. None of the row sizes exceed the block size. Hardly any chained or migrated rows. Now, during this migration, it was recommended to change the block size to 8k. And my concerns are: 1. Would this not increase pinging across the instances? With 9i and interconnect and cache fusion, this should be reduced considerably, so, is it a mute point? 2. This could alter the execution plans of some statements. Would some, maybe a very few of the statements not prefer a full table scan? Any other positive or negative effects of this increase in block size? Hi Stephane, Thanks for the attempt. When I saw the O7_DICTIONARY_ACCESSIBILITY I thought it would be the answer. Unfortunately Dennis Williams is right in saying that this parameter only allows users with SELECT ANY TABLE privileges to also see SYS tables. Short of changing my scripts for different version of Oracle due to obsolete columns and values, I was trying to see how OEM could easily just nominate a minimum database version and ensure that the script still works against a higher version of Oracle. Gurus, I was just given a project to maintain a Computerized Maintenance Management System. When I asked the companies support staff how to roll back patches in the backend Oracle Database (Ver. 8174), they said that there was no way to do this. I'm guessing I could use logminer just incase a patch doesn't work. Would this be a good solution, or are there other (better) ways of safeguarding myself when it comes to patching? Obviously, I will be applying the patches to a test instance first, but I don't want to have to go back to restore from a backup if the patch causes unexpected issues. List, Is there anyway to know absolutely that a table is not in an export file? My import bought in 6 tables, but not the seventh ( I don't think it is in the export). The import bought in the other 544 tables! I have queried under the schema name, after logging in as that user: select table_name from user_tables where table_name like '%BATCH_%'; all other tables are there like they should be, but not the 7th table. This is 8.1.7 to 8.1.7. When I imp I get IMP-00033 Warning table not found in export file. When I test my imp statement against one of the other tables from the export file that I know are there under the schema owner I get: IMP-00015 object already exists. I can't convince this guy the table is not there. What else can I do? Hello fokls. First, I do not and have never worked for Oracle. I thought I'd show you some funny and interesting comments from the Oracle source tree that I've been made privy to. Here is today's installment. /* retch, gag, choke. If this bit is off, oracle doesn't break/reset the ttc pipe in the event of an error. When oracle is running an NPI execution, there may well be data left in the pipe when an error occurs at type-check time since the current crop of bind variables are sent along with the execute function block . Since this bit is always cleared, the data stays in the pipe and fouls things up on the next transmit. So...don't clear the bit here if executing an OEXEC (or an OALL, which may execute an OEXEC). Instead, let opiobv clear it. This means that any execute error will mean a break/reset, even if there is no data left in the pipe. Tough luck, campers */ -- Please see the official ORACLE-L FAQ: http://www.orafaq.com -- Author: oraclegeek INET: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fat City Network Services-- 858-538-5051 http://www.fatcity.com San Diego, California-- Mailing list and web hosting services - To REMOVE yourself from this mailing list, send an E-Mail message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (note EXACT spelling of 'ListGuru') and in the message BODY, include a line containing: UNSUB ORACLE-L (or the name of mailing list you want to be removed from). Hey Guys, I used FGAC for a small application a year ago without problems/issues. I have reread the docs and now I would like to know the experiences of those using FGAC for larger systems. I am now working on an OLTP system that will have tables in the 4+ million range with 100+ concurrent users. It is 8.1.7.4 on HPUX 11 with WebLogic 7. Are there any performance issues with using FGAC in this configuration and with this amount of data? Is there anything I should avoid other than the obvious? I just found a Korn shell script on-line to Delete RMAN backupsets older than a specified number of days. It has syntax in it that RMAN doesn't like, and I can't find a reference to what the script is trying to do anywhere. Hello, I have a question regarding method of index access(full vs. range) that oracle uses when I use different join methods (Hash vs. Nested loop). Here are the some details about the environment. Server : Oracle Server EE ver 8.1.7.2 OS : HP UX 11.0 hash_area_size : 4194304 hash_join_enabled : TRUE hash_multiblock_io_count: 64 The tables, indexes are all analyzed fully (no estimates) with dbms_stat. The following two scenarios are executed back-to-back and are reproducable. The parameter value to the SQL could be any month in a format like 200207, 200201 etc.. When I use nested loop join the index on large table is ranged scaned, but when I use the hash join the full scan on the index is done. My question is why is the behviour of index scan different? Why there is no partition pruning when the table is hash-joined? The details related to the objects is at the end of the message. Thanks for your help. Regards Viral. The query which hits this table and 2 other table has an RULE hint . On the day analyze fails on the big table, performance is very very slow . Here is the query: SELECT distinct m.journal_id||m.yr_of_issue||m.ms_sequence_no||m.check_char MSNO, M.RECEIVED_DATE RECEIVED DATE, M.EDITOR_NO EDITOR NUMBER, S.STATHIST_CODE STATUS CODE, ST.STATUS_DESC STATUS DESCRIPTION, count(*) REVIEWER COUNT FROM mscript m, stathist s, reviewms r, statcode st WHERE M.JOURNAL_ID = 'ES' AND M.EDITOR_NO = 31 AND S.STATHIST_CODE 'z' AND S.STATHIST_CODE = ST.STATUS_CODE AND M.JOURNAL_ID = s.shist_ms_jcode --- primary key AND M.YR_OF_ISSUE = s.shist_ms_yrissue --- primary key AND M.MS_SEQUENCE_NO = s.shist_ms_ms_seqno --- primary key AND M.CHECK_CHAR = s.shist_ms_ckchar --- primary key AND s.shist_ms_jcode = r.msnumber_jcode --- primary key and s.shist_ms_yrissue = r.msnumber_yrissue --- primary key and s.shist_ms_ms_seqno = r.msnumber_ms_seqno --- primary key and s.shist_ms_ckchar = r.msnumber_ckchar --- primary key GROUP BY m.journal_id||m.yr_of_issue||m.ms_sequence_no||m.check_char, M.RECEIVED_DATE, M.EDITOR_NO, S.STATHIST_CODE, ST.STATUS_DESC order by 1 / And the query displays this : ES9507372 10/03/199531 b accepted with one revision 01/10/2002 ES9507372 10/03/199531 d author revision returned ES9507372 10/03/199531 e all reviews returned ES9507372 10/03/199531 f sent to editor ES9507372 10/03/199531 g proofs sent to author ES9507372 10/03/199531 j Cols receipt and processing ES9507372 10/03/199531 l acceptance pending materials ES9507372 10/03/199531 m manuscript initially received ES9507372 10/03/199531 p sent to Cols. journals office ES9507372 10/03/199531 q sent for review I only want it to select the first record all the way on top because it has the most current data with the most corrent DATE. Records in STATHIST TABLE ARE LIKE where stathist_date and stathist_code are the last 2 columns. ES9507372 01/10/2002 b ES9507372 01/05/2002 d ES9507372 01/02/2002 e Unique for each row. I know I am missing something in the query, but I've got a brain freeze; I basically need to have the query select only records that have LATEST stathist_date and NOT repating all recs there are. I'm a student dba'r running 9i on windows xp. I have created a second database (database name=bill, instance name = bill). After I first created it, I tried to mount it after shutting down the installation seed database (database name = orcl, instance name = orcl). I kept getting the message 'cannot mount database in exclusive mode'. After several attempts to get out of exclusive mode, I gave up. The next night, without making any changes, I tried again and this time I was sucessful in mounting the bill database. I created a data tablespace (data) and four tables which I populated. Then I queried the database name from v$database and got the response 'bill'. Next I queried the instance name from v$instance and got 'orcl' when I should have gotten 'bill'. I double checked the database name and again got 'bill'.! ! p; How can this be? But the real problem is that when I tried to mount the database bill again tonight, I again got the message ''cannot mount database in exclusive mode'. I can't find an explanation for this in the book. I tried to startup nomount using the 'bill' pfile which showed an idel instance started. Then I tried to issue the alter database mount parallel command but it comes back with the 'cannot mount database in exclusive mode'. When I then query the instance_name from v$instance I get orcl instead of bill. Can any one help me out? Thanks! Bill Johnson

I'm also a brand new student of Oracle. The EXACT same thing happened to me in class a couple of weeks ago when I created a 2nd database. The reason it happened was that I didn't create the DB all in one day...and when I went in on the 2nd day to finish it, I did notstartup the 2nd database before continuing to run the scripts, etc. So, the default database started and then some of the commands/scripts actually modified the default database's control files, etc. It was a real mess. We couldn't mount to delete certain files, yet we couldn't delete certain files in nomount, etc. The teacher had me run the attached script, and that fixed it. And I learned some more lessons, hahaha! I don't know if this is what happened to you, but since your situation is EXACTLY like mine, error messages, etc., I would suspect this. So check out the attached script and maybe it'll help. You'll have to modify the .sql file to replace with your database names. In the existing file, "will" is the default database and "test" is the database I was creating. Check through and fix up filenames, paths, etc. --JoJo -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED]Sent: Wednesday, February 20, 2002 7:54 AMTo: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-LSubject: (no subject)I'm a student dba'r running 9i on windows xp. One more thing about the script I sent -- that was for 8i, not 9i, so check it out in that respect, as well. Cheers, JoJo

Hello Gurus, I am working on a little project using the package utl_http, so far I have had limited success using this package. The below http call fails for some reason, it is supposed to download a page of size ~10K, i.e. 5 pieces of data, but instead it fails, I am not sure why... Any ideas ?? is it because that site is trying to plant/read a cookie or something on those lines ?? any help on this is much appreciated. declare v_htm_pieces utl_http.html_pieces ; begin pv_htm_pieces := utl_http.request_pieces('http://table.finance.yahoo.com/t?a=01b=01c=01d=01e=31f=01g=ds=ADCTy=0z=%5Eixic'); end; Peace, James Reddi _ Do You Yahoo!?
