The CD will not modify the files on your hard disk.

No, booting from the cd will do nothing to your files. If you have
booted from the hard disk before now, you might do an e2fsck -p for
each of your partitions and prayerfully, this will work to fix the
difficulty. It is possible that, if you just shut down the machine
