Have you tried viewing the .ram file as a text file?  As Doug has 
explained, often .ram files aren't the actual data itself, but yet another 
link to the actual file.  What I did is ran less file, then put *that* 
link through mplayer, and it worked pretty well.

Well, I sometimes look at the text of a stream file--and we can also paste an 
url in the wget program.  So, if its a stream file

wget -i stream.ram
Otherwise just look for an exact url of the audio.
