Dear Peter,

most universities have some taxonomy classes. And most professors don't
have anything against guests in their classes ... German Universities
even have a "guest hearer" status for 100 Euros per half year .... If
one talks to the professor, usually there is no problem getting into the
institutes's library and all university libraries will get just about
anything on loan ...

In fact, what anyone needs is
a) a general taxonomy text book (but make sure it is alpha taxonomy)
b) a computer
c) a telephone
d) the drive to visit a library
e) a brain to use the above

then orchid literature is 95% article in journals ... so you have to
collect them ... the library will make copies or otherwise, you get the
literature on loan and copy it yourself ... just about everyone has a
scanner by now ... if not .... get one, you get a cheap but good enough
scanner for less than 40 Dollars ... and that is all you need ...

Collect the articles ... a full meter of articles on Phragmipedium
alone, another meter or more on Paphiopedilum, and I don't have
everything. Of course you can collect scans on CD-ROMs, but I find that
it is better to work with hard copies

When and if you want to work on a genus or or on a species ... collect
the literature first .... then start writing about it ... not the other
way around.

Why do you think that my private Orchid library has cost me the
equivalent of a house (European price)?
Why do you think I have 14,000 Orchid slides . ... part of which kindly
send me from various friends

I just have enough from people like Prem going on the list and asking
for literature and assistance because they are too stupid and/or too
lazy to get it themselves. And when you tell them, they insult you.

I will do literature searches for anyone on the list ... price 100 Euros
per hour, 10 Euro cents per copy, 30 Euro cents per page of scan ...

You and many others know that I have been working free of charge for the
orchid community for years ... I sure as hell don't need idiots like Prem to
insult me for it

Regards
Guido
