The AOS has a stated leaning toward ex situ conservation. While this is
fine, unless more effort is put toward conservation of habitat, orchids
in the wild will become more like redwood trees; curiosities of a wild
time gone by. Is there any group that is working towards this goal?
There was the recent preservation of 600K acres (or was it hectares?) of
orchid-rich land down near Tierra del Fuego. I love the blending of art
and science and patience that produces a wonderful hybrid. But I want to
know that the parents and grandparents are still doing fine out there
somewhere. I would like to see the AOS take on some serious habitat
conservation.
