As you mentioned - it is the system processes that are the problem, not
any applications that you are running.
Redhat 7.2 is the 2.4 kernel, which is not entirely stable. There are
also some problems with ipchains - use iptables instead.

This may be a shot in the dark but had a very similar problem on one of our servers.
Are you running Orion on a non-privileged port and using ipchains to map (say port 80 to port 8000?) If so, the problem is with
