Sounds like you've got Sun RI libs in your classpath (jre/ext dir perhaps?).
The NPE is thrown by sun code and not Orion code (Orion code is
com.evermind.*) so find out where the com.sun classes are loaded from,
remove it from the path and retry.

No, this sounds like a bug to me. Orion shouldnt care much for static
methods at all and just ignore them ("other" static methods should also be
fine per the spec as long as they dont contain/keep state, ie static
fields). This will be fixed for the RC2 release (thanks for the report)
or
assembly (to make the .ear), both works.
b) For deployment you'll have to edit server.xml etc until the admin console
is released.
