It sounds like you will need a better image manipulation program. Here are
some you can get for free:
http://www.gimp.org/
http://www.getpaint.net/
In these programs they should have an option to set the background as
transparent, here are some tutorial links:

What do you mean by transparent in this context? Do you want an alpha
blended object
