Re: [osg-users] Brand New BlackBerry Storm 9500--$250 for sale.

2009-05-04 Thread Art Tevs
Actually the new feature, where the moderators has first to approve the very
first post of any new member should already keep the bad guys away. This
feature is already in action, since couple of days, as I have posted previously.

I am not a friend of using a lot of anti-spam things like captchas, manual
activation etc, because this either slow downs the community or is just very
nerved. There is already some kind of captcha thing, which has to be filled out
when registering. This blocks already around 20-30 registrations of spam-bots
per day! Combines with the feature of first post moderation we should be able
to prevent spamming effectively.

cheers

Robert, yes, it happens that spammers just do register on forums to post
something there. Mailing lists doesn't look that attractive as forums,
therefor there are human controlled spam bots around. In almost 4 months
of forum existing there were 2 spam messages out of around 3000 usual
messages, so the rate of spamming is still very low.

However, you are right that 2 are already to much. I am currently
working on the possibility to moderate only the first message of any
user. However this takes time, since there are no real good mods for the
phpbb forum exists, which can do that. So guys, please be patient, I
will try to come up with a solution for that.

Cheers,

Sadly the bots get around this quite easily these days,

I managed to stop most at vis-sim, with manual activation, email
verification, image numbers, instructions not to fill any field but name and
email etc,

I get a about 1 a week now that gets as far as me having to activate it, but
at one point at over 100 per week hit

Some clever but misguided folks in spam world

Thanks for looking in to this. It has to be a general problem that
other forums see, so getting at patch for forum.openscenegraph.org may
well make lives easier for other communities as well.

I don't see anything special in the log files so this looks like a manually
registered user.

I removed the user and deleted the original message from the forum.

Does this mean spamers are registering just for the purpose of
spaming, or could it be that legitimate subscriptions are being
hijacked? The mailing list hasn't had these same problems though,
both require subscription.

Is there an log of how long the user was subscribed?

I removed the user and deleted the original message from the forum.

Thanks.

Zarim registered yesterday and this was his first post.

The admin interface has a spam log that shows all registration attempts and the
answers given to the anti-bot question. This user was not in those logs.

It could be that this spambot can register to forums by letting humans answer
the anti spam-bot questions for it.
