Radical Islam taught in mosque schools; Victim mentality leaves some
Muslims vulnerable to extremism: British bishop

LONDON (AP): A Church of England bishop said in an interview published
Sunday that radical Islam is being taught in mosque schools across
Britain. The Pakistani-born bishop of Rochester, Michael Nazir-Ali, also
said he believes Muslims are sometimes vulnerable to such teachings
because they have developed a victim mentality. "Their complaint often
boils down to the position that it is always right to intervene when
Muslims are victims, as in Bosnia or Kosovo, and always wrong when the
Muslims are the oppressors or terrorists, as with the Taleban or in
Iraq," Nazir-Ali said in an interview with The Sunday Times of London.

"Given the world view that has given rise to such grievances, there can
never be sufficient appeasement, and new demands will continue to be
made," he said. He said that a failure to counter these beliefs had
allowed radical Islam to flourish in Britain and that stricter checks
should be introduced to exclude extremist clerics from the country. "The
two main causes of the present situation (rising extremism) are
fundamentalist imams and material on the Internet," he said. The bishop
said checks on imams' qualifications, their knowledge of the English
language, and their understanding of British life and culture should be
imposed to filter out extremists. Nazir-Ali, 57, was born a Catholic in
Karachi, Pakistan, after his father converted from Islam to Christianity.

Nazir-Ali later converted to Protestantism at age 20, moved to Britain
in the 1980s and became a bishop at age 35. Nazir-Ali, who said he
believes the Christian faith has been fully intermingled with British
values while Islam has not, also joined the debate in England about
whether Muslim women should be allowed to wear full face veils in places
such as work.

He joined officials such as former Foreign Secretary Jack Straw who say
veils are not suitable in some circumstances.
"I can see nothing in Islam that prescribes the wearing of a full-face
veil. In the supermarket, those at the cash tills need to be recognized.
Teaching is another context in which society requires recognition and
identification," he said.
Muhammad Abdul Bari, secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain,
told The Sunday Times that the bishop's comments were not "very helpful
for community relationships."
